Selective Certification:  Certification of eligibles from the Academic Teacher II register may be based on specialized experience in the areas of adult education and literacy, career counseling I, elementary education, english 9-12, industrial arts, mathematics 9-12, no specialty, other certification, physical education, social science 9-12, unified science – biology 9-12, unified science – chemistry 9-12, unified science – earth science 9-12, unified science – physics 9-12, vocational secondary business education, vocational home economics . Applicants should describe any work experience in these areas completely.

ACADEMIC TEACHER II

DEFINITION

This is mid-level professional work in the instruction of pupils of normal or impaired learning ability in a state correctional, youth, and/or mental health facility.

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Teaches subject matter appropriate to educational background and certification by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

Instructs juvenile offenders, patients/residents, or adult offenders in state facilities in elementary or secondary school subjects, or in related areas.

Adheres to the state-approved course of study, but is required to exercise considerable ingenuity and flexibility in adapting a program to fit the needs, abilities, and conditions distinctive to pupils in a variety of state facilities.

Maintains and scores pre/post tests.

Plans and outlines classwork within prescribed limits; assembles and prepares learning materials for special study.

Functions as part of a teaching team and assists in developing, implementing, and evaluating individual educational plans.

Supervises the work of Education Assistants; assigns and reviews work to ascertain that tasks have been performed as directed.

Participates in teacher conferences, meetings, and educational research projects.

Maintains scholastic and attendance records.

Confers with parents and/or students regarding students' needs, progress, and/or abilities; provides individual instruction and encouragement as needed.

Orders necessary supplies and materials.

Receives general supervision from an Education Supervisor or other designated administrator, with review primarily for determining adherence to curriculum standards and maintenance of proper discipline.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs)

Intermediate knowledge of modern practices, techniques, and methods of teaching.

Intermediate knowledge of the principles of educational testing and of the principles and methods of remedial education.

Intermediate knowledge of effective means of supervision and instruction.

Intermediate knowledge of the needs and requirements of working with students with disabilities.

Intermediate knowledge of the principles and methods of educational research.

Ability to apply modern methods and principles of education to pupils functioning at the elementary and/or secondary school level.

Ability to maintain an interest in the positive improvement and development of children, adolescents, or adults of normal and/or impaired learning ability.

Ability to maintain proper discipline.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and students.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Ability to obtain (at the time of employment or no later than end of probationary period) an appropriate Temporary Authorization Certificate (TAC) issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education OR an Adult Education and Literacy Certificate (AEL) issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education OR American Board for Certification of Teachers of Excellence (ABCTE).

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Eighteen or more months of experience as an Academic Teacher I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in appropriate coursework or in the field of Education; and,

Two or more years of post-baccalaureate teaching experience in a school accredited by a governing agency (such as the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education or the North Central Association on Accreditation and School Improvement).

OR

A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in appropriate coursework or in the field of Education.
