ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER IV

DEFINITION

This is administrative or consultative professional engineering work for the Division of Environmental Quality, in the administration of a major activity of a statewide program designed to promote public health and environmental quality.

An employee in this class may be responsible for a technical engineering sub-section or act in a consultant capacity within an environmental program in the Division's Central Office. The employee may be responsible for supervision of personnel, or be responsible for technical engineering support functions for a program section in the Division of Environmental Quality Central Office. The employee uses considerable independent judgment and initiative, and receives only general supervision from a designated superior.

Any one position may not involve all of the specified duties or knowledges, skills and abilities, nor are the listed examples exhaustive.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

Supervises a sub-section within a Central Office section of a statewide environmental control program.

Provides guidance to government officials and to the general public, in the area of environmental problems, programs and solutions.

Offers guidance and consultation to professionals (individuals and groups) concerned with the design, construction, and operation of sanitary engineering structures.

Proposed objectives for surveys, reports and reviews of operations.

Reviews plans and specifications for sanitary engineering systems, structures and operations.

Participates in the design of in-service training for engineers and others.

Represents superiors, as requested, in technical conferences and contacts with other governmental agencies.

Prepares papers and lectures on subjects relating to the particular phase of environmental control work to which assigned.

Performs other related work as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the principles, techniques, practices and administration of environmental engineering and environmental programs.

Thorough knowledge of laws, rules and regulations pertaining to Division of Environmental Quality programs.

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of administration and supervision.

Ability to plan work programs and projects, and to integrate activities of the unit into the Division's programs.

Ability to prepare or direct the preparation of technical reports.

Ability to prepare and deliver lectures and papers on environmental programs.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

One year of experience as an Environmental Engineer III in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

OR

Five years of professional experience in engineering, of which three years must have been in environmental, sanitary or chemical engineering; and graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's degree in engineering, with the curriculum approved by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET). (A Master's degree in environmental, sanitary or chemical engineering may be substituted for two years of the non-specialized experience. Other Master's degrees in engineering may be substituted for one year of non-specialized experience.)

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Registration as a professional engineer in the State of Missouri.
