TITLE: Academic Teacher I (3005) ANNUAL SALARY: $27,660.00 - $38,700.00
  Academic Teacher II (3006) ANNUAL SALARY: $32,256.00 - $45,984.00

LOCATION: Applications are being accepted for the purpose of maintaining a register of eligibles who would be available for employment as vacancies occur. When vacancies occur, the names of eligibles available for employment in the county where the vacancy is located will be certified in grade order for employment consideration.

Academic Teacher I DEFINITION: This is entry-level professional work in the instruction of pupils of normal, impaired or retarded learning ability in a state correctional, youth or mental health facility. An employee in this class is responsible for the instruction of juvenile delinquents, patients or inmates of state facilities in elementary or secondary school subjects, or in related areas. The employee follows the state-approved course of study, but is required to exercise considerable ingenuity and flexibility in adapting a program to fit the needs, abilities and conditions distinctive to pupils in a variety of state facilities. Work may include responsibility for supervising subordinate Education Assistants. Duties are performed under the general supervision of an Education Supervisor or designated administrator, with review primarily for determining adherence to curriculum standards and maintenance of proper discipline.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in appropriate course work or in the field of education.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Possession of, or proof of ability to secure, an appropriate provisional, life or professional teaching certificate from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

EXAMINATION COMPONENT: Rating of Education and Experience, 100%.


Academic Teacher II DEFINITION: This is responsible professional work in the instruction of pupils of normal, impaired or retarded learning ability in a state correctional, youth or mental health facility. An employee in this class is responsible for the instruction of juvenile delinquents, patients or inmates of state facilities in elementary or secondary school subjects, or in related areas. Work in this class is distinguished from that of an Academic Teacher I primarily by the additional proficiency in the subject matter taught, or in educational techniques as evidenced by successful teaching experience or graduate school training. The employee follows the state-approved course of study, but is required to exercise ingenuity and flexibility in adapting a program to fit the needs, abilities and conditions distinctive to pupils in a variety of state facilities. Work may include responsibility for supervising subordinate Education Assistants. Duties are performed under the general supervision of an Education Supervisor or designated administrator, with review primarily for determining adherence to curriculum standards and maintenance of proper discipline.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS: Eighteen months of professional experience as a teacher on the elementary, secondary or adult basic education level, and possession of a Bachelor's degree in appropriate course work or in the field of education.

OR

Possession of a Master's degree in appropriate course work or in the field of education.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Possession of, or proof of ability to secure, an appropriate provisional, life or professional teaching certificate from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

EXAMINATION COMPONENT: Rating of Education and Experience, 100%.
