This is semi-skilled work performing laundry activities in a state facility.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

One or more years of experience in a commercial or institutional laundry.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Serves as a lead worker, if required, or performs skilled laundry work with a high degree of independence.

Directs one or more phases of a large laundry operation.

Plans, assigns, and reviews the work of staff and/or resident workers.

Operates and maintains washers, extractors, dryers, tumblers, mangles, presses, and hand irons; instructs staff and/or resident workers in their proper operation.

Loads washing machines, sets appropriate dials, adds proper portions of soaps, bleaches, and/or other laundry additives, and unloads machines and transports laundry to dryers.

Loads laundry into dryers or extractors, sets appropriate dials, and unloads machines.

Performs minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment; reports major faulty equipment to the supervisor.

Maintains records of hours worked by staff and/or resident workers; assists in the preparation of reports; and prepares and submits requests for supplies and equipment.

Maintains standards of safety and sanitation in the laundry area; supervises the cleaning of work areas and equipment.

Inspects the padding and covering of mangles and presses; ensures equipment is working properly; and orders repairs or replacements.

Performs all phases of laundry work, including receiving and distribution of laundry, in a limited laundry operation such as a multi-ward/cottage treatment area.

Receives general administrative direction; work is reviewed for quantity and quality of production.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of the use, operation, and maintenance of washers, dryers, extractors, tumblers, presses, hand and electric irons, and flat work ironers.

Intermediate knowledge of soaps, bleaches, softeners, starches, and stain removers, and their proper use in laundry operations.

Intermediate knowledge of laundering requirements of textiles and colored materials and their reaction to soaps, bleaches, water temperatures, and machine washing.

Ability to train and instruct staff and/or resident workers in laundering operations.

Ability to operate various laundry equipment such as washers, extractors, dryers, mangles, presses, and hand irons.

Ability to plan and organize work to meet production schedules.

Ability to work long hours while standing and under conditions of high temperatures and humidity.

Ability to follow instructions.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.

Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to laundry equipment.

Ability to maintain standards of safety and sanitation.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and residents.
