This is technical work involving offender classification and rehabilitation techniques and practices in the Missouri Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Institutions.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Corrections Officer I or Probation and Parole Assistant I with the Missouri Department of Corrections; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

One or more years of supervisory or public contact (interviewing, investigation, community organization activities, and persuasive sales) work in a business, government, or industrial setting; and one or more years of experience as a Corrections Officer I or Probation and Parole Assistant I with the Missouri Department of Corrections; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for the required general experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year.)

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Evaluates and assigns all offenders a job and bed upon their arrival at an institution.

Approves or denies offender initiated requests for bed and/or job changes and processes accordingly.

Conducts routine inspections of offender housing units; identifies cleanliness, maintenance, safety, and/or security issues, and addresses accordingly.

Assists offenders in adjusting to their environment through the explanation and interpretation of institutional rules and regulations.

Completes data entry necessary for offender classification files.

Provides notary public services to offenders.

Creates offender identification cards.

Meets with incoming offenders and provides orientation; provides offender guidance and assistance as they complete forms such as housing unit and job change requests.

Relieves Corrections Officers during emergency shortages.

Performs work in accordance with established rules and regulations; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work duties as assigned.

Key Skills

Introductory knowledge of the principles and procedures of offender classification in adult correctional facilities.

Introductory knowledge of the methods used in the supervision of offenders.

Intermediate knowledge of the attitudes, problems, and behaviors of incarcerated individuals.

Intermediate knowledge of minority group cultures and customs.

Intermediate knowledge of the general techniques of communicating with and advising offenders.

Intermediate knowledge of the purpose, activities, regulations, and functions of the Missouri Division of Adult Institutions.

Ability to exercise sound judgment during emergency situations.

Ability to perceive and understand facility goals and objectives and exercise discretion in their application to daily duties.

Ability to work with and gain the confidence and cooperation of offenders.

Ability to communicate effectively with members of the classification team, other staff, and offenders.
