This is entry-level professional work providing clinical casework services to persons with mental illness and/or developmental or physical disabilities.
Compiles comprehensive case histories concerning the clients' social, environmental, and economic backgrounds for use by medical and other professional treatment staff.
Participates in admission, social diagnosis, prognosis, progress review, research, community placement, and aftercare planning with an interdisciplinary team and other service agencies.
Intervenes to effect change in the social functioning of the client and family through counseling, referral to other service providers, and education.
Inspects extended care and skilled nursing facilities in order to assess residents' level of care needs, determines the quality and appropriateness of care and social services provided, and monitors compliance with state and federal guidelines for care and services.
Evaluates the suitability of conditions in which clients would be placed on convalescent leave, aftercare, or discharge, and makes recommendations accordingly.
Confers with medical facilities, schools, community groups, public health and social service agencies, and other service providers to discuss referrals, follow-up care, and decisions affecting the client.
Interprets and explains agency policies, treatment philosophy, programs, and goals.
Prepares reports in response to requests for information and services from social, legal, and medical agencies.
Exercises initiative and independence within established policies and procedures.
Performs other related work assigned.
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
Three or more years of experience as a Clinical Casework Assistant with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.
OR
A Master's degree from an accredited school of Social Work (MSW).
OR
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Social Work, Sociology, Psychology, or a closely related field; and,
Two or more years of clinical casework experience under the supervision of a Master's degree in Social Work (MSW) prepared supervisor.

Introductory knowledge of medical and psychiatric diagnoses and implications for treatment prognoses.
Introductory knowledge of federal, state, and facility guidelines and regulations concerning care for persons with mental illness and/or developmental or physical disabilities.
Introductory knowledge of available community resources and their organization, purpose, and use.
Introductory knowledge of the social, emotional, and financial effects of mental and physical problems on clients, their families, and the community.
Ability to apply social casework techniques and practices in a medical or psychiatric situation.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clients, family members, the public, and representatives of other agencies and organizations.
Ability to evaluate the care and services provided to a client in terms of needs, functioning level, progress, and adherence to facility, state, or federal guidelines and regulations.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to work cooperatively in an interdisciplinary team setting.
