Definition

This is professional mid-level graphic arts work preparing and maintaining a variety of visual communication products for a state agency.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Graphic Arts Specialist I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or art institute with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Art, Commercial Art, Graphic Art, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, or a closely related field.

(Experience in graphic arts, commercial art, computer graphics, or a closely related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education at a rate of one year for 30 earned credit hours.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Consults with administrative and professional personnel on various phases of design projects to determine the message and material to be illustrated.

Designs and prepares posters, drawings, diagrams, charts, maps, brochures, newsletters, and illustrations for various agency activities and technical, scientific, and data reports.

Develops graphic artwork, layouts, and designs utilizing computer-assisted technology and a variety of media, equipment, and specialized graphic hardware and software.

Designs and constructs various visual presentations, including photographic displays, dioramas, and graphic and chart displays.

Prepares single or two-color printed documents and publications.

Prepares graphics for use in website design.

Prepares and/or modifies graphic artwork received from other agencies for printing.

Typesets forms in accordance with established standards.

Operates digital and video cameras.

Prepares and maintains files of various projects and artwork for archive.

Exercises independence in the performance of duties, with work being reviewed to assure accuracy of message; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of graphic art methods, and the general principles of layout and design as applied to promotional and informational products.

Intermediate knowledge of typeface, color harmony, and use of color.

Intermediate knowledge of computer graphics programs, font styles, file formats, and the operation of various electronic equipment.

Intermediate knowledge of typography, and typesetting principles and methods.

Intermediate knowledge of operating digital and video cameras.

Intermediate knowledge of cartography.

Ability to translate varied graphic requests of an agency or program into visual form.

Ability to create posters, drawings, diagrams, charts, maps, brochures, newsletters, and illustrations using a variety of computerized systems.

Ability to design and prepare exhibits and displays.

Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and other agency personnel.
