1) What is your suggestion about?

Leadership Gold: Lessons I’ve Learned from a Lifetime of Leading by Dr. John Maxwell tells you how to be a better leader through his stories of failures and successes. Maxwell writes in a simple, understandable manner that makes his book hard to put down. His book is filled with nuggets of wisdom and is written in such a way that you feel like you are having a one-on-one mentoring session.

2) Why did you choose it?

Leadership Gold has been on my desk since 2008. I refer to it often.

The knowledge that is shared is very practical and challenging. For instance, in his chapter “People Quit People, Not Companies,” Maxwell describes how people usually quit because they do not have a good working relationship with their leaders or team, and not because of the work involved in the job itself. After all, people can come to work every day and enjoy tough, demanding jobs if they have good leaders.

The book also asks you to be introspective. Application exercises are included in each chapter to help you digest and apply the insights.

Also, I like this book because each chapter stands on it’s own. You can start anywhere in the book. Choose a chapter that interests you, and dive right in!

3) What else do you want to tell us about it?

John Maxwell is one of the country’s leading leadership coaches and authors. He has sold millions of copies of his books. He has also spoken to organizations as diverse as the United States Military Academy at West Point, the National Football League, and Fortune 500 companies. You can find his books in almost any bookstore.

Leadership Gold is an excellent tool for anyone interested in becoming the best leader (mentor) they can be. And it helps you coach and develop other leaders too.

4) What is a key takeaway for leaders driving improvement in how we deliver for the citizens of Missouri?

The insights from Leadership Gold fit with the direction that our state government is turning. People appreciate working for someone who appreciates them and helps them develop. Leadership Gold helps leaders to improve those around them, bring about greater job satisfaction, and contribute to a happier, more productive employee. In my mind, this is a win for all of us and the citizens of Missouri.

  • Great analogy of the levels of leadership. As, I was watching the video "Five Levels of Leadership", I thought to myself what level am I? I realized I am not at the level I would like to be. I will be reading his book to assist me on my journey.
