Definition

This is skilled work in painting and finishing surfaces of buildings and other structures and equipment with paint, varnish or other coating material.

An employee of this class performs skilled painting tasks in accordance with standard practices of the trade. Work may include the direction of semi-skilled or unskilled helpers. Assignments are received in the form of oral or written work orders. Supervision is received from a superior who assigns work orders and inspects work in progress and completed for appearance and workmanship; however, the employee is expected to determine work methods and proceed with little technical supervision.

Job Duties

Cleans surfaces to be painted or finished by the use of sandpaper, burners, scrapers, brushes, sanding machines and dusters.

Mixes and matches paints for appropriate colors.

Applies paint or finish to the exterior and interior of buildings and to furniture and other structures.

Erects and removes scaffolding as necessary.

Performs incidental related work such as glazing, paper hanging and repairing plaster, cement and marble.

Directs the work of assigned helpers; makes assignments and reviews work in progress and completed.

Estimates time and materials required for the completion of a work order and requisitions materials as necessary.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following entrance requirements are used to admit or reject applicants for merit system examinations, or may be used to evaluate applicants for employment in positions not requiring selection from merit system registers. When applicable, equivalent substitution will be allowed for deficiencies in experience or education.)

Completion of a formal three-year apprenticeship in the painting trade and completion of the eighth school grade.

OR

Four years on-the-job training in the painting trade and completion of the eighth school grade.

Key Skills

Do you possess the key skills which are considered essential for successful employment in this classification?

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, methods and equipment of the painting trade.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the painting trade.

Considerable knowledge of the qualities and adaptabilities of various surfacing materials; methods of preparing surfaces for finishing and mixing materials to acquire desired colors and qualities, and of the weather and wear resisting qualities of paints and other finishing materials.

Ability to make accurate estimates of time and materials required to complete a work order.

Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal work orders.

Ability to instruct and direct the work of helpers.

Ability to climb and work from scaffolding or at some distance from the ground.
