Definition

This is senior-level skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of all types of diesel-powered heavy construction equipment as well as automotive and gasoline-powered equipment.

Job Duties

Repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds automotive and heavy construction equipment such as bulldozers, tractors, graders, and rollers.

Supervises the work of staff in a mechanical shop engaged in equipment repair and maintenance.

Replaces mechanical and electronic fuel injection system on gas and diesel engines.

Rewires ignition systems, lights, and instrument panels.

Replaces and adjusts brakes; aligns and repairs steering mechanisms.

Grinds valves; replaces piston rings, bearings, and clutch assemblies.

Overhauls transmissions; repairs or replaces u-joints, mufflers, exhaust systems, wiring, and accessories.

Fabricates parts for tractors and mowers.

Prepares requisitions, time records, cost reports, and other related information.

Operates a variety of motor vehicles as necessary.

Exercises independent judgment in the performance of responsibilities; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Six or more years of experience as a mechanic, including one year involving skilled work in the maintenance and repair of diesel-powered equipment; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Missouri Class A Commercial Driver's License within six months of appointment.

Comprehensive knowledge of the practices applied in the safe and efficient repair of internal combustion equipment and in the safe and efficient use of tools and equipment in diesel and gasoline engine repair, rebuilding, and adjustment work.

Comprehensive knowledge of electronics, on board computer operations, and diagnostic system problems.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of operation of hydraulic systems.

Skill in the use of the tools and equipment employed in diesel and gasoline engine repair, rebuilding, and adjustment work.

Skill in diagnosing and repairing defects in diesel and gasoline equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to perform manual work, including heavy lifting and working in awkward positions.
