Definition

This is mid-level specialized law enforcement and/or physical security work with the power of arrest within the Missouri Capitol Police.

Job Duties

Provides security for the Governor, his/her family, and guests during public or private events.

Serves as liaison between the Governor and Missouri State Highway Patrol executive security staff to ensure a coordinated response to threats and enhance general working relationships.

Maintains communications systems, such as two-way radio and cellular phones, to coordinate the Governor's activities and related security needs.

Provides general protection of property and persons within the Missouri Capitol Police jurisdiction.

Assists with shift supervision; serves as shift supervisor as needed.

Performs specialized duties such as firearms instructor, building steward, intelligence officer, field training officer, communications supervisor, and investigation team member as required.

Prepares clear and concise reports of violations of state laws and security regulations.

Patrols the buildings and grounds; observes activities of employees and the general public; detains and makes arrests for violations of state laws.

Investigates complaints of violations of state laws and security regulations.

Answers questions from the public; directs persons to appropriate offices and facilities.

Operates and monitors computerized intrusion and fire alarm systems within the Missouri Capitol Police jurisdiction and Governor's Mansion.

Responds to fire and intrusion alarms in the Capitol Complex buildings.

Enforces parking regulations, including authorizing the towing of illegally parked vehicles.

Assists building occupants during fire evacuation procedures.

Ensures building occupants are alerted during hazardous weather conditions.

Issues citations to violators; testifies in court cases regarding violations.

Conducts follow-up investigations on initial criminal reports; participates in criminal investigations and apprehension of wanted individuals involving other law enforcement agencies.

Gathers detailed intelligence information regarding security threats to persons and property.

Participates in periodic retraining sessions requiring the physical ability to recertify in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, firearms, non-lethal weapons, handcuffing, and arrest procedures.

Exercises a significant degree of initiative and judgment; receives general administrative direction.

Provides first aid in cases of injury or illness.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

One or more years of experience as a Capitol Police Officer with the Missouri Capitol Police.

OR

Two or more years of experience as a certified peace officer in a federal, state, county, or city law enforcement agency with the power of arrest; and, commissioned as a peace officer by the Missouri Department of Public Safety (must be at least 21 years of age to be commissioned).

Special Requirements

1. Ability to pass a background investigation and drug screening administered by the Missouri Capitol Police prior to appointment.

2. Ability to pass a medical and visual examination with eyesight corrected to 20/40, plus a psychological evaluation as prescribed by the Missouri Department of Public Safety after a conditional offer of appointment has been made.

3. Possession of a valid Missouri vehicle operator's license.

4. Ability to obtain and maintain Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
