This is advanced and highly technical work in the installation, maintenance and repair of telecommunication equipment.
An employee in this class is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of telecommunications terminal devices such as telephones, key telephone systems, teleprocessing terminals, modems, personal computers and diagnostic equipment. Work includes the inspection of premises on a statewide basis to determine optimum location of equipment and mode of installation, and includes design drafting of a telecommunication plan for each location. The employee assembles and/or disassembles telecommunications equipment according to installation diagrams, schematics or work orders. Work also involves testing newly installed equipment and making connections to regulated facilities. General direction is received from an administrative superior.

One year as a Telecommunications Technician I in an agency under the Missouri Merit System.
OR
Four years of experience in telecommunications involving installation, repair and maintenance of voice or data equipment or other closely related work; and possession of a high school diploma or a proof of high school equivalency. (Post-secondary education in an approved electronics school may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required experience up to a maximum of two years.)

Maintains records concerning the maintenance and repair of equipment and the installation diagrams, schematics, etc.
Acts as a lead worker and performs the more complex installation, testing, maintenance, diagnostic and repair procedures.
Participates in the evaluation of bids submitted by vendors for telecommunication systems, parts, maintenance and installation.
Trains office personnel throughout the state in the operation and maintenance of telecommunications equipment.
Maintains an inventory of telecommunication equipment, and transports equipment to various office locations throughout the state.
Uses, calibrates and/or maintains electronic testing equipment such as multimeters, dtmf/dial pulse analyzers, test tone generators, bridges, etc.
Prepares schematics, wiring diagrams and other drawings indicating the placement of telecommunications terminal equipment.
Installs necessary wiring and makes connections to regulated facilities to conform with specific requirements.
Installs coaxial cable for computer terminals.
Attends training sessions in order to stay current with new hardware and software technologies in the area of telecommunications.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of the characteristics, capabilities and working concepts of telecommunication equipment.
Considerable knowledge of electronic theory, circuits and components.
Considerable knowledge of common carrier services.
Working knowledge of the general principles of teleprocessing programming, and procedures used in an office telecommunication environment.
Ability and willingness to travel on a statewide basis.
Ability to identify problems in a telecommunication system or network and to recommend remedies or solutions.
Ability to apply troubleshooting logic in diagnosing, isolating and repairing circuit malfunctions.
Ability to use electronic test equipment tools and materials.
Ability to read and interpret parts and service manuals.
Ability to communicate well with the users of telecommunication equipment.
Ability to follow complex written and oral instructions.
Ability to work well under pressure and to make correct decisions and to meet deadlines.
