This is professional work planning and coordinating assigned components of the natural resources management program for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 30 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Biology, Ecology, Zoology, Botany, Forestry, Geology, Soils, Wildlife or Fisheries Management, Natural Resources Management, Range Management, Hydrology, or a closely related field; and,

Three or more years of professional experience in the inventory or assessment of ecosystems and/or the development and implementation of management plans to restore or maintain ecosystems and specific native or exotic plant and animal species.

(24 earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college or university in the specified areas may substitute for a maximum of one year of the required experience. A Master's degree from an accredited college or university in the specified areas may substitute for a maximum of two years of the required experience.)

(One additional year of qualifying experience may substitute for the 30 earned credit hours of required specialized education.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Plans, directs, and coordinates assigned components of the natural resources management program involving such things as ecosystem restoration, endangered and exotic species control, animal population imbalances, natural and wild areas management, and scientific research.

Conducts scientific research to diagnose ecosystem problems and develop ecosystem management plans.

Develops natural resource management plans; participates on conceptual development plan teams; resolves resource management issues.

Provides advice and assistance to park management and naturalists related to natural resources management, protection, and stewardship; serves on interagency task forces and work groups.

Solicits recommendations for, and develops, research projects for state parks; assists in the preparation of budget requests.

Participates on projects with various constituency and professional organizations involved with natural resources management.

Assists with National Environmental Policy Act reviews.

Serves as a representative of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources on various natural resources committees; participates with constituent and other agency technical staff on environmental planning projects.

Coordinates training programs relating to natural resource management, preservation, and stewardship.

Recommends legislative and policy actions relating to land resource protection for Missouri state parks.

Coordinates and conducts natural resource damage assessments; develops mitigation plans to reduce damages.

Manages and/or assists in the prescribed burn program.

Provides advice and assistance to staff regarding natural resource management plans, projects, and actions.

Exercises significant independence and initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of Missouri 's flora, fauna, presettlement conditions, and natural history of the State.

Comprehensive knowledge of ecological principles and practices.

Comprehensive knowledge of the rationale, history, and meaning of ecosystem preservation and accepted restoration techniques.

Intermediate knowledge of state and federal laws and policies related to land preservation.

Ability to inventory and assess ecosystems, quantitatively analyze and monitor ecosystem change, and carry out management actions.

Ability to research and prepare records and reports.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to plan, organize, and present the results of research and/or analysis projects.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, agency management, professional resource management organizations, and the public.
