This is entry-level supervisory work in directing a custodial force of moderate size in cleaning and related functions. Work of this class differs from that of a Housekeeper in that the primary emphasis is normally on supervision of custodial staff rather than management responsibilities for the housekeeping function.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

One or more years as a Custodial Worker II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

Three or more years of janitorial, custodial, housekeeping, or closely related experience of which one or more years must have involved responsibility as a crew leader or lead worker in custodial operations required to maintain offices, living quarters, dining areas, and other areas used by employees, clients, and/or the general public.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Directs a number of work crews in the basic cleaning and related functions in an assigned area of a large state institution on a given shift or acts as the assistant to the Housekeeper in overall management in a moderate size institution or is responsible for all custodial activities in a small institution.

Assigns and supervises work crews engaged in mopping, scrubbing, dusting, polishing, and basic cleaning and custodial tasks.

Exercises initiative in planning and directing custodial operations to insure adequate coverage to maintain assigned areas.

Trains employees and residents in their duties.

Introduces new cleaning methods by demonstrating techniques and procedures; instructs workers in efficient use of supplies and materials.

Maintains an inventory of cleaning supplies and materials; requisitions needed items.

Notifies a supervisor or other appropriate person of needed building repairs.

Exercises initiative in planning and directing custodial operations with supervision from a Housekeeper or administrative designee.

Performs related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of the methods, materials, and equipment used in institutional housekeeping operations.

Intermediate knowledge of the operation and care of housekeeping equipment.

Intermediate knowledge of cleaning compounds, insect/vermin control solutions, and their chemical effect on surfaces, materials, and textiles.

Ability to train, supervise, plan, and coordinate the work of employees.

Ability to work with minimal supervision.

Ability to understand and follow instructions.
