Definition

This is advanced work in assisting a dentist in the care of patients and in related office work.

An employee in this class is responsible for assisting in dental treatment procedures and laboratory tasks. Work also involves responsibility for the management of the dental clinic office, including scheduling appointments, keeping dental charts and records, and ordering supplies. Direct supervision is received from the dentist, who reviews work through written reports, observation of work and discussion of work methods and results.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Graduation from an accredited dental assisting program.

OR

Two years of experience as a dental assistant; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Special Requirements

Possession of a certificate as a Certified Dental Assistant as issued by the Dental Assisting National Board.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Manages the dental clinic, as directed by the dentist; arranges appointment schedules for patients, keeps dental charts and records, and maintains files.

Assists a dentist by charting the mouth and teeth of patients, passing instruments and performing other tasks in the care of patients.

Removes treatment packs, and periodontal dressings, applies sealants, and performs other procedures as directed by the dentist.

Lays out instruments and medicines; sterilizes instruments; oils and cleans equipment; supervises routine cleaning of rooms and equipment.

Prepares client for dental x-rays; takes and develops dental x-rays, as directed by the dentist.

Mixes and handles dental materials according to instructions.

Assists dentist in the construction and adjustments of dentures.

Arranges for oral surgery facilities.

Orders and maintains dental supplies and instrument parts for the dental clinic.

Types forms and letters necessary for operation of dental office.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Working knowledge of routine dental practices, procedures and terminology.

Working knowledge of various dental instruments and equipment.

Some knowledge of office management as applied to a dental clinic.

Ability to use, sterilize and otherwise care for dental instruments and equipment.

Ability to chart mouth and teeth.

Ability to take and develop dental x-rays.

Ability to recognize gross abnormal dental conditions.

Ability to alleviate patient's anxieties, and promote trust and confidence.

Ability to mix fillings and other denture materials.

Ability to operate a typewriter, word processor, or personal computer
