Definition

This is routine work in assisting a dentist in the care of patients and in related office work.

An employee in this class is responsible for keeping records, managing clerical detail, providing diagnostic aids to the dentist, performing clinical supportive functions including preparing and dismissing patients, and performing various dental treatments and laboratory tasks which can be learned on the job. Employee works under the direct supervision of the dentist.

Job Duties

Assists a dentist by charting the mouth and teeth of patients, passing instruments and performing other routine tasks in the care of patients.

Removes treatment packs and periodontal dressings, applies sealants, and performs other procedures as directed by the dentist.

Keeps dental charts and records and maintains files.

Prepares tray set-ups for dental procedures.

Types forms necessary for the operation of a dental office.

Arranges instruments and medicines.

Sterilizes instruments, oils and cleans equipment, and supervises the routine cleaning of rooms and equipment.

Checks file cards and arranges appointments.

Orders administrative and dental supplies as necessary.

Mixes amalgam and synthetic fillings material according to instructions.

Exposes and processes x-ray film as directed by the dentist.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Six months experience assisting a dentist in the examination and treatment of patients; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency. (Completion of an accredited Dental Assistant program may be substituted for the required experience.)
