This is entry-level support work in a laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Three or more years of experience in laboratory support, office support work, or mailroom operations; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

A combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience described may substitute for the stated qualifications.)

Special Requirements

Ability to perceive the color spectrum.

By assignment, a position may be required to obtain and maintain Federal Dangerous Goods Shipping (Class 6) certification and/or meet USDOT hazardous materials shipping regulations.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Receives formal on-the-job and/or classroom training in the shipping, receiving, storing, and handling of biological, chemical and/or environmental samples/specimens, assembling and shipping of sample test kits, accessioning of testing samples, and disseminating of test results.

Receives, sorts, and disseminates incoming laboratory specimens/samples; compares and verifies incoming laboratory test specimens/samples and requisitions; completes appropriate chain of custody documents.

Receives close supervision when assisting in preparing food, wipes, soil, paint, and other specimens for testing; prepares newborn screening bloodspots for further study and testing.

Assembles and refurbishes sample test kits; restocks supplies; and prepares and ships orders for kits.

Coordinates delivery services of sample test kits and laboratory test specimens with customers and vendors.

Collects and ships laboratory test specimens utilizing safety protocols for dry ice and chemicals.

Utilizes specialized databases and management systems for proper documentation of incoming specimen.

Provides assistance to laboratory customers regarding submission processes and requisition of sample test kits; assist in receiving laboratory orders and determining testing needs.

Assists with entering, updating and/or retrieving testing information/results utilizing database systems.

Communicates with authorized representatives and private submitters regarding results reporting and laboratory procedures.

Establishes and maintains filing systems; prepares laboratory records for scanning, storage, and/or archiving.

Reviews laboratory documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.

Receives training in the proper operation of specialized laboratory equipment, such as Autoclave, Glassware washer/dryer, and dry heat oven.

Collects, sterilizes, and/or disposes of hazardous biological waste, laboratory test specimens, contaminated glassware, and protective equipment.

Maintains a clean work environment; ensures equipment works properly, and supplies/materials are appropriately stored.

Carries out assigned responsibilities within established guidelines; receives close supervision from a designated supervisor and work is reviewed for results, validity, and adequacy of procedures.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Introductory knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.

Introductory knowledge of the proper methods for safe collection, handling, disposal, and sterilization of chemicals, infectious materials, hazardous biological waste, contaminated glassware, and laboratory equipment.

Introductory knowledge of storeroom methods and procedures used in a laboratory environment.

Introductory knowledge of the United States Postal Service, United Parcel Service, and Federal Express regulations, and mail standards.

Introductory knowledge of laboratory terminology, procedures and equipment, computer information systems, and software.

Introductory knowledge of general office practices and procedures.

Introductory knowledge of the periodic table.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and protocols and make accurate observations.

Ability to learn and strictly adhere to the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT) hazardous material shipping regulations and Missouri Hazardous Waste Management Law.

Ability to operate laboratory equipment.

Ability to accurately enter data into electronic systems.

Ability to lift, move, and transport samples and/or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, public, and staff.
