This is mid-level support work in a laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

One or more years of work experience in a medical or laboratory environment which included shipping and receiving tests samples, samples accessioning, samples preservation, neutralization and disposal of samples, and/or recording physical and chemical properties of samples; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(A combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience described may substitute for the stated qualifications.)

Special Requirements

Ability to perceive the color spectrum.

By assignment, a position may be required to obtain and maintain Federal Dangerous Goods Shipping (Class 6) certification and/or meet USDOT hazardous materials shipping regulations.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Assists in preparing food, wipes, soil, paint, and other specimens for testing; prepares newborn screening bloodspots for further study and testing.

Assists in training and oversight of co-workers on policies, procedures, and safety protocols.

Utilizes dry ice, acids, and other chemicals to preserve and ship specimens; prepares complete sample test kits for shipping; ensures proper storage of chemicals and specimens/samples.

Enters, updates, and/or retrieves testing information/results utilizing specialized databases and management systems.

Accepts laboratory orders and determines testing needs.

Communicates test results and responds to inquiries from hospitals, clinics, health professionals, local public health departments, state and local agencies, and general public.

Compares and verifies incoming specimens and requisition forms; reviews laboratory documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance; insures the integrity of samples received.

Provides assistance to laboratory customers on the proper collection, shipment, and submission of laboratory specimens.

Utilizes specialized databases and management systems for proper documentation of incoming specimens.

Receives, sorts, and disseminates incoming laboratory deliveries, and coordinates delivery services of sample test kits with vendors.

Prepares and ships sample test kits and specimens.

Operates specialized laboratory equipment; tests for proper functionality.

Collects, sterilizes, neutralizes, and/or disposes of hazardous biological waste, laboratory test specimens, contaminated glassware, and protective equipment.

Exercises independence and judgment in the performance of responsibilities; carries out assigned responsibilities within established guidelines, and receives general administrative direction.

Perform other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.

Intermediate knowledge of laboratory terminology, procedures, equipment, computer information systems, and software.

Intermediate knowledge of the proper procedures for safe collection, handling, sterilization and neutralization, and disposal, of chemicals, infectious material, hazardous biological waste, contaminated glassware, and laboratory equipment.

Intermediate knowledge of the United States Postal Service, United Parcel Service, and Federal Express regulations, and mail standards.

Intermediate knowledge of general office practices and procedures.

Introductory knowledge of the periodic table.

Ability to safely follow procedures regarding the use and storage of dry ice, acids, bases, and other chemicals.

Ability to understand and apply the Federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act requirements for laboratory results and the release of information.

Ability to understand and follow instructions and protocol and make accurate observations.

Ability to operate laboratory equipment.

Ability to prepare and maintain records, reports, and review documents for accuracy and completeness.

Ability to accurately enter data into electronic systems.

Ability to lift, move, and transport samples and/or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, public and staff.
