This is supervisory work involving the performance of business activities and support functions in a laboratory setting.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Three or more years of work experience in a medical or laboratory environment which included shipping and receiving test samples, sample accessioning, samples preservation, neutralization and disposal of samples, and/or recording physical and chemical properties of samples; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
(A combination of education from an accredited college or university and experience described may substitute for the stated qualifications.)
Ability to perceive the color spectrum.
By assignment, position may be required to obtain and maintain Federal Dangerous Goods Shipping (Class 6) certification and/or meet USDOT hazardous materials shipping regulations.

Hires, directs, trains, and supervises staff responsible for laboratory support functions; plans, coordinates, schedules, and assigns work.
Mentors staff in laboratory procedures including sample preparation, accessioning, and disposal; evaluates employee performance; recommends and implements disciplinary/corrective action; approves and monitors leave.
Oversees maintenance of critical laboratory equipment (i.e. centrifuges, microscopes, air handling systems); ensures the proper operation of laboratory equipment for the safety of all laboratory employees.
Assists management in determining appropriate laboratory submission processes.
Coordinates and oversees the reporting of highly consequential laboratory results.
Coordinates the handling and disposal of hazardous and infectious laboratory samples and biological and chemical waste.
Maintains inventory of specialized testing equipment and supplies; performs annual reconciliation of laboratory shipping records.
Assists in budget development; monitors and tracks expenditures; evaluates funding in consideration of laboratory priorities; and prepares assigned program fiscal reports, contracts, and grants.
Assists Laboratory Support Coordinator and administration in the preparation of specifications for laboratory supplies, testing kit components, equipment, and other commodities.
Assists Laboratory Support Coordinator with renewal and bidding of large contracts for supplies, maintenance, and state-wide courier system; contacts vendors to obtain information on cost, price quotations, availability, and specifications.
Reviews, enters, updates, and/or retrieves testing information/results utilizing specialized databases and management systems; communicates test results and responds to inquiries.
Provides customer assistance to determine testing needs; assures laboratory orders are complete; identifies issues and provides solutions; ensures that all testing kit orders are filled in a timely manner.
Performs technical laboratory support work as needed to meet the needs of the laboratory including pre-analytical and post-analytic functions.
Exercises significant independence and initiative in the performance of responsibilities; receives general administrative direction.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory safety protocols.
Comprehensive knowledge of laboratory terminology, procedures, equipment, computer information systems and software.
Comprehensive knowledge of the proper procedures for safe collection, handling, sterilization and neutralization, and disposal of chemicals, infectious materials, hazardous biological wastes, contaminated glassware, and laboratory equipment.
Comprehensive knowledge of the mailing regulations and standards pertaining to sending/receiving laboratory kits and samples.
Introductory knowledge of the general principles of fiscal control, procurement and supply, and related support service functions.
Introductory knowledge of storeroom methods and procedures used in a laboratory environment.
Introductory knowledge of inventory and property control systems.
Skill in applying analytical techniques for sample preparation and to prepare reports from a variety of information, and review documents for accuracy and completeness.
Ability to plan, schedule, supervise, train, and assign work.
Ability to understand and make independent decisions based on knowledge of agency operations, policies, and procedures.
Ability to maintain a high level of discretion when dealing with sensitive/confidential information and to understand and apply federal requirements for laboratory results and the release of information.
Ability to follow safety procedures regarding the use and storage of dry ice, acids, bases, and other assorted chemicals.
Ability to prepare and maintain requisition and inventory records.
Ability to lift, move, and transport samples and/or supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with customers, vendors, public, and staff.
