This is professional medical work as a general practitioner in a state facility or as a consultant for the Medicaid program.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Possession of a current license to practice as a physician/surgeon in the State of Missouri.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Provides general medical and/or psychiatric services to patients in a state hospital or facility or evaluates medical claims.

Evaluates need for medical and psychiatric services and modifies existing programs to meet those needs.

Supervises and participates in the medical and psychiatric examination of patients; diagnoses illness, medical, and psychiatric problems; prescribes courses of treatment; and participates in the treatment program, including the treatment of acutely ill patients.

Participates in consultation with, or under the direction of, a qualified medical specialist in the examination and treatment of patients with mental illness, and/or acute or chronic diseases requiring specialized treatment.

Participates in staff conferences to discuss the assessment and diagnosis of specific cases; reviews care, treatment, and cost standards; and plans and evaluates health programs.

Supervises physicians, nurses, technicians, and other staff.

Makes hospital rounds, reviews charts, checks reports, prescribes medication, and treats patients.

Assists in the instruction of professional and other staff in the general field of medical care.

Reviews claims and prior authorization requests for a variety of medical services covered under the Medicaid program; makes recommendations for approval or denial.

Reviews provider medical records to assess medical necessity, quality, appropriateness, and utilization patterns of services billed to the Medicaid program.

Provides consultation to program administrators and staff, fiscal agents, medical providers, public agencies, and organizations on the interpretation and application of Medicaid procedures and policies.

Provides administrative assistance to Medicaid program managers in the evaluation, development, and revision of the Medicaid program as it relates to medical services and practices; makes recommendations for inclusion in Medicaid coverage based upon clinical evidence and best practices.

Performs surgery depending upon specialty area and level of competency; supervises the postoperative care of patients.

Addresses professional and lay groups to explain the purposes, operating procedures, and problems of health care; enlists public support where needs dictate.

Attends and participates in conferences, conventions, and workshops in order to evaluate, develop, and improve medical services programs.

Exercises significant independence and initiative in the performance of responsibilities; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of general medicine.

Intermediate knowledge of the methods and procedures utilized in diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and injuries, and in the practice of preventive medicine.

Introductory knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of psychiatry, surgery, and other fields related to work assignment.

Introductory knowledge of recent developments in the field of general medicine.

Introductory knowledge of the principles and practices of medical supervision.

Ability to learn and apply basic techniques necessary to the administration of health care programs.

Ability and skill in the application of the principles and practices of medical science.

Ability to supervise, plan, and coordinate the activities of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals.

Ability to create and maintain an effective working relationship with patients, employees, health care professionals, and relatives of patients.
