This is senior-level psychiatric and nursing assistant work in the care, treatment, and/or security of forensic psychiatric and/or sex offender clients in maximum and intermediate security areas within Missouri Department of Mental Health facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Security Aide II (Psychiatric) with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Four or more years of experience as a Psychiatric Technician II and/or III with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Four or more years of experience as a lead worker providing direct care to forensic psychiatric or sex offender clients in a maximum or intermediate security area within a mental health facility; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university may substitute for the stated experience on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the stated experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours for one year.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Assumes responsibility for the supervision of Security Aides in multiple wards of a forensic unit; assigns and directs work flow in assigned areas; reviews and evaluates the work of lower-level staff; recommends disciplinary action and provides input on staff performance to the supervisor; and instructs staff in the total care and security of clients.

Serves as general assistant to, or as relief supervisor for, members of the administrative staff; confers with supervisors on unit management problems; assists and participates in planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care; and/or assumes responsibility for special problems that occur with forensic psychiatric and/or sex offender clients.

Investigates reports of rule violations, client and/or staff complaints, and related incidents; prepares violation and complaint reports for supervisor’s review; and maintains discipline in the assigned area(s).

Assists with the orientation and training of new staff regarding their duties and the rules and regulations of the facility and the forensic unit; participates in staff development.

Assigns staff within managed area ensuring there is adequate staff coverage; completes necessary scheduling documentation.

Performs regular rounds of building or wards to ensure a safe and secure environment.

Responds to emergency or crisis situations and intervenes as authorized.

Administers and charts prescribed medications if licensed as a practical nurse; works under the supervision of a registered nurse in accordance with physician orders.

Assists in coordinating the work of nursing services staff within the forensic unit.

Prepares and/or supervises the preparation and maintenance of records and reports.

Attends supervision and management in-service training sessions.

Exercises judgement and initiative within the limit of established policies and procedures; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of persons with mental illness.

Comprehensive knowledge of the care and treatment of forensic psychiatric and/or sex offender clients including basic nursing, first aid, emergency treatments, and security skills.

Intermediate knowledge of the principles of supervision.

Intermediate knowledge of facility and forensic unit practices, rules, and regulations.

Skills in leadership and conflict resolution.

Ability to effectively manage a multi-ward forensic unit.

Ability to supervise, review, and evaluate the work of assigned staff.

Ability to recognize and respond to the emotional and physical needs of persons with mental illness.

Ability to effectively and efficiently respond to medical emergencies, manage aggressive behaviors, and monitor security of the wards or units.

Ability to learn and effectively use approved crisis intervention techniques.

Ability to administer first aid and perform emergency treatments as instructed.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, supervisors, and the general public.

Ability to accurately report and record observations.

Ability to accept and adapt to changing assignments and policies and procedures.
