This is mid-level direct care work serving as a lead worker or independent work of comparable responsibility in a state facility for persons with developmental disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

One or more years of experience as a Developmental Assistant I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Two or more years of experience as a Psychiatric Technician I or II, or Security Aide I or II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Two or more years of direct care experience on a ward or unit with residents who are primarily diagnosed with developmental disabilities; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Serves as lead worker for a small number of Developmental Assistant I's in developing client skills related to self-help, play, education, muscular development, and socialization.

Participates in implementing and conducting planned sessions of individual or group treatment activities in physical therapy, activity therapy, education, vocational rehabilitation, and related areas on a ward or in a cottage.

Supervises as required in the absence of the Developmental Assistant III.

Provides direction and assistance through counseling sessions with staff.

Observes, reports, and records changes in the physical condition, behavioral response, and emotional status of clients.

Provides basic health care for clients; checks vital signs and applies simple dressings.

Maintains a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for client care and treatment activities.

Administers oral, rectal, vaginal, optic, ophthalmic, nasal, topical, and insulin injection medications, under professional supervision, and after certification by facility officials.

Assists in the instruction and orientation of new Developmental Assistants regarding their duties and the regulations of the facility; participates in the continued in-service training and practical instruction of staff.

Reports complaints of clients, and staff or other incidents which require further action to immediate supervisor.

Prepares and maintains records and reports; circulates and implements directives.

Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment; orders replacements as required.

Performs moderately complex duties without detailed instruction; receives supervision from a higher-level Developmental Assistant or other staff member who reviews work through reports and direct observations.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of basic treatment techniques used in nursing, physical therapy, activity therapy, education, vocational rehabilitation, and related areas.

Intermediate knowledge of elementary behavior modification techniques.

Ability to function as a lead worker in implementing individual and/or group programs for the care and treatment of clients.

Ability to administer oral, rectal, vaginal, optic, ophthalmic, nasal, topical, and insulin injection medications after certification by facility officials.

Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for client care and treatment activities.

Ability to apply basic skills required in activation and learning programs.

Ability to accurately report and record observations.

Ability to understand and follow directions.

Ability to accept and adapt to changes in assignments, methods, and policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, staff, supervisors, and the general public.

Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of assigned duties.
