This is entry-level professional occupational therapy work treating clients as part of a therapeutic program for persons with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Possession of a current license to practice as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Missouri.

(A current limited permit to practice as an Occupational Therapist in the State of Missouri is acceptable in meeting this requirement at the time of appointment.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Plans and conducts a program of individual and group therapeutic activities based upon medical prescription and client's needs, abilities, and interests.

Administers and interprets standardized and non-standardized assessments to evaluate clients for placement in therapeutic activities.

Carries out treatment through instruction and assistance of clients in a variety of therapeutic media, daily living activities, and individual and group therapies directed toward enhancing occupational performance and skills.

Organizes, stimulates, and encourages participation in individual and group activities.

Obtains adequate supplies, equipment, and space for conducting therapeutic activities.

Teaches simple craft and recreational techniques, independent living skills, and use of adaptive equipment.

Observes and reports on client progress; maintains essential records and files.

Participates in meetings and conferences with medical and professional staff to plan and modify individual and group treatment plans.

Ensures safety and custody of clients; maintains occupational therapy areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.

Plans and supervises the work of Occupational Therapy Assistants and/or Activity Aides engaged in client treatment.

Instructs and supervises occupational therapy students in the theory and application of occupational therapy media; reports on student progress.

Assists in educating health care personnel in the objectives of occupational therapy treatment.

Exercises independent judgment and accepts responsibility for specific methods used and results obtained; receives supervision from a senior therapist who reviews work for quality and achievement of program objectives.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Introductory knowledge of the principles and practices of professional occupational therapy.

Introductory knowledge of the use of occupational therapy materials and equipment.

Introductory knowledge of the psychosocial problems and disease processes of persons with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities.

Skill in the use of a variety of therapeutic media, and adaptive and mobility equipment.

Skill in conducting activities of daily living, splinting, positioning, muscle re-education, and joint mobilization.

Ability to instruct staff in occupational therapy media and application.

Ability to apply the principles and practices of professional occupational therapy and to adapt treatment to individual and group needs.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, family members, and facility staff.

Ability to accurately record and report client progress.
