This is responsible administrative and advanced technical work in physical therapy.

An employee in this class plans, directs and supervises a large physical therapy program in a state facility. Work involves responsibility for supervising and for personal participation in the evaluation of clients and the administration of physical therapeutic agents prescribed by a physician. Duties necessitate a high degree of technical competence in the demonstration of new techniques and in assisting when necessary in the application of various forms of treatment. The employee is responsible for supervising the work of a staff of physical therapists and physical therapy aides. General supervision is received from a medical superior who reviews work through conferences and observation of progress made by clients.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Three years of experience as a professional physical therapist, including one year at the level of a Physical Therapist II; and graduation from a four-year college or university physical therapy program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. (Possession of a current Missouri license as a Physical Therapist will substitute for the required education qualification.)

Special Requirements

Possession of a current license to practice as a Physical Therapist in the State of Missouri at the time of appointment.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Plans, supervises and participates in an extensive program of physical therapeutic activities in a large department of physical medicine and habilitation/rehabilitation.

Assigns therapists and aides to cover various units of physical therapy, such as electrotherapy, mechanotherapy, hydrotherapy, and exercise.

Conducts meetings with physical therapists and aides to discuss work problems; demonstrates new techniques in treatment.

Conducts a training program for therapy aides, student nurses, and other groups on the basic objectives and techniques of physical therapy.

Submits requisitions for materials and equipment; inspects equipment and recommends repairs or replacement; takes inventory of equipment and supplies.

Maintains compliance with appropriate licensure and/or certification standards; informs staff of changes in these standards.

Prepares, for approval, forms which indicate the progress of clients; compiles monthly reports which contain records of the kind of therapy administered and results obtained.

Performs related work as required.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate therapists and aides.

Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with clients and to obtain their cooperation in the treatment prescribed.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the medical and nursing staffs of the facility and with students, subordinate therapists, and aides.

Ability to maintain records and reports of treatments administered.

Ability to understand, interpret, and adapt a physicians written or oral directions.

Ability to make necessary working adjustments and minor repairs to standard physical therapy equipment.
