This is responsible supervisory work on a production line in a rehabilitation workshop.

An employee in this class supervises a production line in a rehabilitation workshop.  Work includes laying out a job and meeting the production schedule as concerns quantity and quality.  This employee attends staff meetings and observes and reports on the progress of individual workers.  Work at this level is characterized by responsibility for planning and organizing activities without close supervision and may involve personal responsibility for a significant phase of the workshop program.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Three or more years of experience in an industrial setting involving fabricating and assembling small articles; or three years of experience in a rehabilitation workshop or a training program for persons with physical disabilities, mental illness, and/or developmental disabilities; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Three or more years of experience as an Activity Aide, Education Assistant, or in an equivalent capacity in a mental health facility in the areas of handicrafts, or industrial arts; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Instructs workers in the handling of tools and machinery, maintenance of the workshop, prevention of accidents, and operations relating to the design, packaging, handling, and fabrication of products.

Inspects finished products to determine if quality standards are met.

Receives training in appropriate methods relating to supervising and training workers, behavior patterns of persons with mental illness and/or developmental disabilities and approaches to motivating workers.

Secures cooperation of patients in planned program of therapeutic production activities.

Assumes responsibility for housekeeping in the workshop area.

Attends staff meetings with professional workshop personnel and with staff approval, assumes responsibility for worker placement and orientation on specific jobs.

Under professional supervision, receives case data for information on abilities, skills, aptitudes, and limitation of patient; checks with nursing personnel to determine ward behavior.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Working knowledge of processes required to fabricate and assemble small articles.

Some knowledge of workshop operations.

Ability to maintain standards of quality and quantity.
