This is advanced professional engineering work, participating in environmental engineering activities for the protection of the public health and the environment.
An employee in this class may be assigned as a deputy regional administrator or a unit chief within a regional office or the Central Office of the Division of Environmental Quality. The employee assists in determining program emphasis and scope of activity within the area of assignment. Work may include training and supervising subordinate employees, or may be of a technical nature requiring a high level of engineering responsibility. The employee receives general supervision from a designated superior.

Three years of experience as an Environmental Engineer II in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
OR
Four years of professional experience in engineering; and graduation from a college or university with a Bachelor's degree in engineering, with the curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc. (ABET). (A Master's degree in environmental, sanitary, or chemical engineering may be substituted for two years of the experience. Other Master's degrees in engineering may be substituted for one year of the experience.)
Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Missouri.

Participates in the engineering review of the hydraulics and details of water supply systems and plants, industrial and domestic waste treatment systems, solid and hazardous waste management systems, or air pollution control systems, etc.; directs the gathering and interpreting of data as to pollution, contamination, and construction and design features; reviews engineering plans and specifications for sewage and industrial waste treatment plants, water supply systems, solid and hazardous waste disposal areas or air pollution control systems, for compliance with approved standards.
Consults with officials, owners and operators of plants and establishments and engineers and architects with regard to laws, regulations, and engineering requirements of Division of Environmental Quality programs.
Provides supervision for the regional office in the absence of the Regional Administrator.
Supervises, assigns and assists in the work of a unit composed of a small group of professional personnel.
Trains subordinate engineers and other technical staff.
Prepares papers and lectures on subjects relating to the environment.
Assumes responsibility for a highly technical support function within a regional office or within the central office of the Division of Environmental Quality.
Prepares and reviews technical and detailed reports on field activities.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Thorough knowledge of the chemistry, bacteriology, and physical properties of ambient air and air pollutants, water, sewage, solid and liquid waste, and of modern engineering practices in the field of water supply and purification, sewage and sewage treatment, treatment of industrial waste, solid and hazardous waste management and/or air pollution control.
Considerable knowledge of the principles and administration of environmental engineering.
Working knowledge of modern engineering practice in the field of environmental control.
Ability to coordinate routine and special investigations involving the application of professional theory and interpretation of laws, regulations and requirements.
Ability to consult with and advise municipal officials, plant owners, industrialists and others on design, construction and operation of environmental control facilities.
Ability to prepare engineering reports and to prepare papers and lectures related to the environment.
