This is entry-level professional space planning and interior design work for alteration, construction or re-configuration of state-owned or leased facilities and the review of contract work by consultant design firms.
An employee of this class assists in the development, design and review of space utilization for state facilities. Work includes conferring with state agencies to effectively address space planning needs, measuring, computing, estimating, computer-aided drafting and design, drafting, design, conferring with consultant architectural design firms, plan review and inspection. The employee works under the supervision of a professional superior and may work more independently as experience is gained.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

One year of professional experience in non-residential design work, including space analysis, office and systems layouts, commercial and institutional design, etc.; and graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in interior design, interior architecture, or a closely related field.

Visits existing buildings and works on the utilization of space and interior planning with state agency or institutional management.
Attends conferences with professional superiors, to confer with consultant architectural/design firms and with state agency management or institutional heads concerning interior projects.
Assists in preparing space analysis, furniture and material selections, cost estimates and written specifications.
Prepares as-built drawings, layouts, space analysis, drawings, reports and graphic illustrations for projects utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting equipment as well as conventional drafting methods.
Prepares interior plans and specifications for systems furniture, demountable walls and landscape partitions.
Assists in the review of concept, design, specifications, cost estimates, furniture and material selections prepared by architectural/design firms.
Visits sites to inspect interior construction to insure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
Keeps abreast of developments in specialized furnishings and equipment such as those necessary for use by the handicapped.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Working knowledge of systems furniture applications and design layouts.
Working knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of interior design.
Working knowledge of perspective, balance, design and color harmony.
Working knowledge of the media, processes, materials and techniques used in preparing graphic illustrations.
Skill in drawing architectural plans and making presentations.
Skill in working with a computer-aided design system.
Ability to write specifications and make cost and material estimates.
Ability to use Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) for applications of space management, as-built drawings, design and presentations.
Ability to inspect work under construction for compliance with specifications.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, state agency management and consultants.
