This is highly responsible professional space planning and interior design work for alteration, construction or re-configuration of state-owned or leased facilities and the review of contract work by consultant design firms.
An employee of this class develops, designs and reviews space utilization for state facilities. Work includes conferring with administrative heads of state agencies or institutions and consultant design firms, computing, estimating, computer-aided design and drafting, plan review and inspection. The employee manages interior design projects independently, or coordinates the design of interior projects from proposal to completion with the assistance of drafters or other subordinate staff. Only general direction is received from an administrative superior; consequently, the employee has wide latitude for independent judgment and action in making decisions involving interior construction and design.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Five years of professional experience in non-residential design work including space analysis, office and systems layouts, commercial and institutional design, etc.; and graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in interior design, interior architecture, or a closely related field.
OR
Two years of experience as a Designer II in an agency under the Missouri Merit System.
Professional membership in the Institute of Business Designers.

Visits existing buildings and works on the utilization of space and interior planning with state agency or institutional management.
Confers with consultant architectural/design firms and with state agency management or institutional heads concerning interior projects.
Plans and coordinates the occupancy of state facilities involving electrical, telephone, computer and other equipment needs; office landscape systems evaluation, design, bid and installation; and the organizing, implementing and supervision of the move.
Manages specialized projects involving interior building design concepts, including construction of nursing homes, correctional and mental health facilities.
Prepares or supervises the preparation of as-built drawings, layouts, space analysis, reports and graphic illustrations for projects utilizing Computer Aided Design and Drafting equipment as well as conventional drafting methods.
Reviews and evaluates concept, design, specifications, cost estimates, furniture and material selections prepared by architectural/design firms to determine compliance with established standards and sound interior design practices.
Visits sites to inspect interior construction to insure compliance with approved plans and specifications.
Keeps abreast of developments in specialized furnishings and equipment such as those necessary for use by the handicapped.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of interior design.
Thorough knowledge of construction methods, materials and furnishings and their applications to the interior design phase of projects.
Thorough knowledge of perspective, balance, design and color harmony.
Considerable knowledge of the design of interiors, furnishings and equipment for health care, mental health, specialized schools and correctional facilities.
Considerable knowledge of historic preservation and restoration of facilities and furnishings.
Ability to prepare complete architectural drawings and presentations, cost and material estimates and write specifications for interior projects.
Ability to use Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) for applications of space management, as-built drawings, design and presentations.
Ability to organize and manage the occupancy of office buildings, health care facilities and specialized schools.
Ability to determine from an inspection of existing facilities, the feasibility of proposed alterations or additions and inspect work under construction for compliance with specifications.
Ability to supervise the work of a small staff of designers or drafters.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, state agency management and consultants.
