This is mid-level technical work in capturing, storing, manipulating, documenting, distributing, and displaying geographically referenced information from a variety of sources.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Geographic Information Systems Technician I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 15 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Geographic Information Systems, Geography, Cartography, Earth Science, Natural Resources, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Computer Science, Civil Engineering, Surveying, or a closely related field.

(Experience in geographic information systems work may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Captures, stores, manipulates, documents, distributes, and displays geographically referenced information from a variety of sources.

Uses utility and data conversion software, digitizing tablets, computer screen digitizing, or other methods for capturing data.

Manipulates and analyzes data which may include quality assurance, creation and maintenance of spatial data topology and attributes, format manipulation, geo-referencing, and datum and projection transformations.

Compiles, attributes, edits, and maintains data in geographic and operational databases.

Reviews new procedures and software applications prior to full implementation to determine ease of use, functionality, and to detect potential problems.

Responds to technical questions from geographic information systems (GIS) users; resolves problems and/or refers and discusses complex problems with supervisor or other designated contacts.

Translates technical concepts and terminology into terms understandable to non-technical GIS users.

Uses queries and GIS applications to generate reports and maps, and to ensure and enhance data quality.

Ensures data and data processing procedures adhere to standards, policies, and other guidelines.

Participates in meetings, training seminars, and GIS user groups.

Receives detailed directions; work is reviewed upon completion for adherence to directions, policies, and procedures.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of principles, practices, terminology, and trends in GIS and related technologies.

Intermediate knowledge of database systems and their design.

Intermediate knowledge of computer operating systems.

Introductory knowledge of geographic information applications, analysis, and the relationships between different types of spatial data.

Introductory knowledge of cartographic principles and spatial analysis.

Ability to apply basic mathematical principles.

Ability to apply database analysis, design, and testing concepts.

Ability to interpret technical manuals and geospatial metadata.
