This is entry-level supervisory corrections work in the control and treatment of offenders, or serving as an assistant to a Corrections Training Officer, in the Missouri Department of Corrections.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

One or more years of experience as a Corrections Officer I or Probation and Parole Assistant I with the Missouri Department of Corrections; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Two or more years of experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Special Requirements

A physical examination by a physician may be required before or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards for employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections.

By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Job Duties

Supervises Corrections Officer I’s; develops expectations and monitors performance and work habits.

Assists the Corrections Training Officer in conducting orientation and in-service training programs.

Observes personnel to ensure compliance with established rules, regulations, and procedures.

Conducts on-the-job training for Corrections Officer I’s.

Serves as officer-in-charge of special security posts where independent judgment and responsibility are required.

Patrols living quarters, grounds, and buildings to observe offender behaviors and the effectiveness of Corrections Officers.

Prepares and submits reports on offender violations of divisional or correctional facility rules, unusual offender behaviors, observed mechanical deficiencies, and security breaches or failures.

Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behaviors, and encouraging worthwhile activities.

Inspects buildings and equipment for security, safety, and sanitary conditions.

Supervises movement of offenders inside and outside the correctional facility; conducts periodic counts of offenders; and searches offenders and their living quarters for contraband.

Arbitrates disputes and settles grievances among offenders, enforcing disciplinary measures when necessary; refers difficult disciplinary problems to an administrative supervisor.

Performs work in accordance with established rules and regulations; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Intermediate knowledge of the rules and regulations, operation, and security of an adult correctional facility or community release center.

Intermediate knowledge of the methods and techniques of supervision used to maintain discipline over staff and individuals under restraint.

Intermediate knowledge of individual and group behaviors and attitudes of individuals under restraint.

Intermediate knowledge of health and safety practices in a correctional setting.

Skill in the use of firearms and emergency equipment.

Ability to enforce rules, regulations, and discipline with firmness, tact, and impartiality.

Ability to gain and sustain the confidence and respect of staff and offenders.

Ability to maintain the proper attitude toward the rehabilitation of offenders.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, offenders, and the general public.
