This is mid-level supervisory and/or specialized corrections work in the control and treatment of offenders in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
Three or more years of experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility, of which one year must have been as a Corrections Officer II or Probation and Parole Assistant II with the Missouri Department of Corrections; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
A physical examination by a physician may be required before or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards for employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections.
By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Serves as the assistant/relief shift supervisor in an adult correctional facility with the Division of Adult Institutions.
Serves as the assistant/relief shift supervisor in a community release center with the Division of Probation and Parole.
Serves as the assistant to the Chief of Custody at the Cremer Therapeutic Community Center with the Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services.
Supervises and instructs lower-level Corrections Officers and/or Probation and Parole Assistants; develops expectations and monitors performance and work habits; and provides assistance with problems as they arise.
Directs a major activity such as control center operation or the reception and orientation process.
Patrols living quarters, grounds, and buildings to observe offender behaviors and the effectiveness of Corrections Officers or Probation and Parole Assistants.
Performs shift and post assignments and inspects staff arriving for duty.
Directs and supervises periodic counts of offenders.
Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper correctional facility staff; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offender’s social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behaviors, and encouraging worthwhile activities.
Performs regular rounds of assigned posts to ensure that Corrections Officers or Probation and Parole Assistants are on duty and attentive to their duties.
Investigates offender disturbances and complaints; directs the maintenance of discipline among offenders.
Assists in conducting training sessions for staff.
Performs work in accordance with established rules and regulations; receives general administrative direction.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of the rules and regulations relating to the operation and security of an adult correctional facility, or community release center.
Comprehensive knowledge of the methods and techniques of supervision used to maintain discipline over staff and individuals under restraint.
Intermediate knowledge of health and safety practices in a correctional setting.
Intermediate knowledge of individual and group behaviors and attitudes of individuals under restraint.
Skill in the use of firearms and emergency equipment.
Ability to exhibit the proper attitude toward the rehabilitation of offenders.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in dealing with offenders and lower-level Corrections Officers and Probation and Parole Assistants.
Ability to gain and sustain the confidence and respect of staff and offenders.
Ability to exercise sound judgment and act quickly in an emergency situation.
Ability to enforce rules, regulations, and discipline with firmness, tact, and impartiality.
Ability to maintain records and prepare, or supervise the preparation of, a variety of reports.
Ability to communicate effectively.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, offenders, and the general public.
