This is senior-level supervisory corrections work in the control and treatment of offenders in the Missouri Department of Corrections. 

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Four or more years of experience in the custody of adult criminal offenders in a city, county, state, or federal facility, of which one year must have been as a Corrections Officer III with the Missouri Department of Corrections; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Special Requirements

A physical examination by a physician may be required before or at the time of appointment to determine if the applicant meets the physical standards for employment established by the Missouri Department of Corrections.

By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Serves as assistant to the Chief of Custody and/or as a shift supervisor in an adult correctional facility with the Division of Adult Institutions.

Serves as assistant to the Chief of Custody in a community release center with the Division of Probation and Parole.

Serves as Chief of Custody at the Cremer Therapeutic Community Center with the Division of Offender Rehabilitative Services or the Kansas City Reentry Center with the Division of Adult Institutions.

Conducts inspections to ensure that Corrections Officers are on duty and attentive to their duties; maintains records of Corrections Officers' performance and work habits.

Discusses minor adjustment problems with offenders; refers serious problems to proper facility staff specialists; and promotes rehabilitation by attempting to modify offenders’ social attitudes, discouraging undesirable behavior, and encouraging worthwhile activities.

Assumes responsibility for the operation of the facility in the absence of higher-ranking officers; assumes command during emergencies.

Participates on the facility offender disciplinary committee responsible for determining disciplinary measures to be carried out in cases involving violation of division or facility rules.

Investigates reported infractions of rules and regulations by offenders or employees.

Serves as a member of the facility classification committee; interviews new offenders, and assists in their assignment.

Directs inspections and searches of offenders, their living quarters, and other areas of the correctional facility.

Maintains records; prepares, or supervises the preparation of, a variety of reports.

Conducts training sessions for corrections personnel.

Exercises considerable discretion in the performance of daily tasks and in emergency situations; work is reviewed by inspections and reports; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Intermediate knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to correctional facilities and statutes dealing with criminal offenders.

Skill in the use of firearms and emergency equipment.

Ability to supervise and train Corrections Officers in the performance of their duties.

Ability to enforce rules, regulations, and discipline with firmness, tact, and impartiality.

Ability to exercise sound judgment in dealing with offenders and staff.

Ability to take initiative and respond quickly in an emergency situation.

Ability to gain and sustain the confidence and respect of staff and offenders.

Ability to maintain records and prepare, or supervise the preparation of, a variety of reports.
