This is professional supervisory social service work directing social service activities in a circuit, regional office, or central office in the Children’s Division of the Department of Social Services.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. A degree in Social Work or comparable human services field is preferred; however, applicants with an unrelated Bachelor’s degree, but possessing direct relevant experience and/or competencies may be allowed substitutions on a case-by-case basis; and,

Six or more years of professional experience with a public or private agency in the delivery of protective children’s services including casework/case management in: investigation of abuse or neglect of children; coordination of child foster care, adoptions, and family centered services; juvenile treatment/rehabilitation; and/or providing in-home family crisis intervention services, and possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

(A combination of graduate education from an accredited college or university in the preferred fields and experience described may substitute for the stated qualifications.)

Special Requirements

The operation of a motor vehicle is an essential function of this classification. Must be able to legally operate a motor vehicle in the performance of assigned duties upon the date of hire and throughout employment.

Job Duties

Supervises Children’s Service Supervisors in planning and implementing procedures to accomplish the goals of a social service program and provide services to families, children, or parents.

Provides orientation and direction to Children’s Service Supervisors and/or other managers of individual and group programs in keeping with Division policies, procedures, standards, and goals.

Supervises and coordinates the activities of assigned staff engaged in child abuse and neglect investigations and treatment in accordance with agency procedures.

Provides qualitative case reviews of the service standards provided by social service personnel and supervisory practices of assigned Children’s Service Supervisors; recommends improvement for social services and supervision.

Assumes responsibility for higher-level managers in their absence as directed.

Attends in-service orientations in the areas of division policies, processes, and programs.

Provides periodic field reports on the standards, development, and progress of assigned social service program to immediate supervisor.

Provides periodic evaluations and performance appraisals on Children’s Service Supervisors.

Provides recommendations to management for the appointment, promotion, dismissal, transfer, and educational leave of assigned personnel.

Interprets the social service program to related agencies, other disciplines, public officials, and the community.

Assumes responsibility for current statistical and fiscal reports and research compiled by children’s social service staff.

Manages an assigned budget.

Provides technical assistance and consultation to managers regarding all aspects of the social service program.

Assumes responsibility for quality and quantity of services which may include direct supervision.

Supervises social service activities of moderate size and complexity in a metropolitan office unit or a moderate size circuit.

Develops and implements corrective action plans and/or quality improvement plans as directed.

Exercises initiative and independence within established guidelines; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.
