Definition

This is skilled locksmith work involving the alteration, repair, maintenance, and/or replacement of locks, locking devices, doors, door closures, and associated structures.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Three or more years of skilled experience in mechanical, carpentry, electrical, or closely related trades, including one or more years of experience involving the installation, repair, and rebuilding of locks; and, possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Post secondary training from an accredited vocational/career or technical school or earned credit hours from an accredited college or university in the building, mechanical, or electrical trades may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the general experience, at a rate of 30 earned credit hours, or 480 clock hours for one year.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Opens and repairs locks using hand tools and special equipment; checks for proper operation of locking devices.

Disassembles padlocks, safe locks, and door locks; repairs or replaces worn pins, springs, and other parts.

Adjusts pin length and inserts new or repaired pins into locks to change combination.

Fabricates new or duplicate keys using key cutting machine.

Maintains and repairs a variety of mechanical and electrical locks, door closures, and associated structures.

Installs locks and strike plates.

Prepares and maintains a file of installed locks and a list of doors that are keyed together or separately.

Prepares and maintains a list of personnel assigned keys to facility locks.

Maintains equipment and supply inventory.

Exercises independence and initiative in the performance of responsibilities; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, and equipment of the locksmith trade.

Comprehensive knowledge of lock construction and the principles of key and combination lock operation.

Intermediate knowledge of practices and procedures of mechanical, carpentry, and electrical trades.

Skill in the use of the tools and equipment of the locksmith trade.

Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff.
