This is supervisory work involving the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment in a large and well-equipped garage.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

 (The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay Systems positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)

Two or more years of experience as an automotive mechanic involving skilled work such as overhauling engines, repair of manual transmissions, electrical/hydraulic system repair, and related work, including one year in a supervisory capacity; and completion of a formal three-year apprenticeship in the automotive mechanic trade.

OR

Two or more years of experience as an automotive mechanic involving skilled work such as overhauling engines, repair of manual transmissions, electrical/hydraulic system repair, and related work, including one year in a supervisory capacity; and completion of four years of on-the-job training in the automotive mechanic trade.

(Training from an accredited vocational/technical school in motor vehicle mechanics will substitute on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the on-the-job training at the rate of 30 earned credit hours, or 480 clock hours for one year.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Plans, organizes, schedules, and assigns work to employees, offender mechanics, and/or helpers; inspects work in process and upon completion.

Makes decisions regarding procedures to be followed to resolve specific repair problems.

Supervises and instructs employees, offender mechanics, and/or helpers in the repair and/or reconditioning of automobiles, light and heavy trucks, tractors, and related equipment.

Prepares and maintains garage records and reports; approves requests for parts and materials.

Supervises and/or maintains a perpetual inventory of stock, tools, and equipment.

Supervises and/or schedules the maintenance/repair of vehicles to ensure jobs are handled in the most efficient manner with equipment available.

Exercises independent judgment within established guidelines for the efficient and economical operation of the garage; receives general administrative direction through reports and observation of equipment operating condition.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of standard practices, methods, techniques, tools, and equipment used in the automotive and mechanical trades.

Comprehensive knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of standard automotive and related equipment.

Comprehensive knowledge of occupational hazards of the trade and of applicable safety precautions and practices.

Intermediate knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of supervision.

Skill in the use of the tools, machinery, and equipment of the automotive and mechanical trades.

Ability to detect mechanical defects and make proper repairs.

Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and evaluate the work of skilled and semi-skilled employees, offender mechanics, and/or helpers, and to obtain efficient results from their efforts.

Ability to prepare and maintain records and reports, and requisition parts and materials as required.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with facility staff, offender mechanics, and/or helpers, outside vendors, and representatives from other agencies.
