This is skilled electrical and mechanical work involving responsibility for directing and performing installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of large-scale and complex refrigeration and air conditioning systems and equipment.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
Two or more years of experience as a Refrigeration Mechanic I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
OR
Completion of a formal four-year apprenticeship in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning; and,
Two or more years of skilled experience in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
OR
An Associate's degree or certificate in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (may be as a part of a program in Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) from an accredited post-secondary, two-year vocational, or technical school followed by;
Four or more years of experience in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning.
OR
Seven or more years of experience in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Supervises the work of lower-level Refrigeration Mechanics or other maintenance staff involved in the operation, maintenance, and repair of large and complex refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems; makes work assignments; and inspects work in progress or upon completion for proper equipment operation.
Instructs skilled and semi-skilled workers in the proper operation, preventive maintenance, and repair of large and complex refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
Sets up a preventive maintenance schedule for equipment.
Inspects, adjusts, calibrates, maintains, and repairs complex refrigeration equipment and air conditioning systems including central air conditioning and handling systems, circulating pumps, cooling towers, walk-in coolers, refrigerators, and ice makers.
Advises superiors on the purchase, replacement, or major overhaul of large and complex refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems.
Estimates costs of installation and/or repair; prepares sketches and does layout work.
Assists contracting companies in the installation of large equipment and systems.
Orders replacement parts and equipment; maintains work records.
Determines work methods upon receiving work orders and proceeds without technical supervision; work is subject to review for compliance with directions or with plans and specifications.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of the standard practices, methods, and tools involved in the operation, maintenance, installation, and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment and systems.
Comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Comprehensive knowledge of theories and principles of refrigeration, air conditioning, and electrical systems.
Comprehensive knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and sheet metal trades as they relate to refrigeration work.
Ability to detect and diagnose faulty operations in various kinds of refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
Ability to perform and instruct others in a variety of skilled refrigeration and air conditioning tasks.
Ability to lay out, assign, and supervise the work of skilled and semi-skilled workers performing refrigeration and air conditioning tasks.
Ability to prepare and work from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and work orders.
Ability to prepare preventive maintenance work schedules for refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
Ability to make estimates of time and materials required to complete work orders.
Ability to keep records and prepare reports.
