This is skilled work in the maintenance and repair of high pressure boilers and related equipment.
An employee of this class performs skilled work in the maintenance and repair of boilers, steam and water lines, regulating and electrical control devices and other related equipment. Work may include directing assigned maintenance helpers. Assignments are usually received in the form of oral or written work orders or from preventive maintenance schedules. Supervision is received from a superior who inspects work for compliance with directions; however, the employee is expected to determine work methods and to work independently.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Four years of experience, on-the-job training or apprenticeship in one or a combination of the maintenance trades including or supplemented by one year of experience in skilled maintenance and repair of boilers and related equipment; and completion of the eighth school grade. (Post secondary training in an accredited vocational training school in the mechanical or maintenance trades may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the general experience.)

Repairs and maintains boilers and related equipment such as feed water pumps, circulating pumps, valves and regulators, and steam and water lines.
Maintains and repairs boilers by removing scale from boiler tubes, replacing fire brick, and related work.
Repairs and replaces steam and water lines, unions, regulators, strainers, steam traps, and related equipment in line.
Replaces seals and gaskets in a variety of power plant equipment.
Reads sketches and diagrams in performing maintenance and repair work.
Instructs and oversees the work of assigned assistants in the maintenance and repair of boilers and related equipment.
Operates power lathes, drill presses, threading machines, power saws and grinding machines.
Tests and monitors the water treatment system of high pressure boilers.
Maintains and repairs electrical and/or electronic components such as replacing parts in control panels, repairing broken wires and related work.
Performs related work as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment, methods and practices of welding, plumbing, and general mechanical repair work.
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in working with high pressure boilers.
Working knowledge of the operation of high-pressure boilers and auxiliary equipment.
Working knowledge of codes and standards related to repair and maintenance of high pressure boilers.
Skill in using the standard hand tools, machines, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of high pressure boilers and related equipment.
Ability to work from sketches or from oral or written instructions.
Ability to direct helpers or inmates assigned to the work.
