Definition

This is skilled work in the fabrication, alteration, and repair of sheet metal articles, equipment, and structures.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Completion of a formal four-year apprenticeship in the sheet metal trade; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

OR

Five or more years of on-the-job training in the sheet metal trade; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Fabricates, alters, repairs, and installs a variety of sheet metal and related items such as stove pipes, grates, grills, ducts, gutters, sinks, shelves, cabinets, security screens, and other similar items.

Operates and maintains bench and hand tools and equipment such as shears, bend brakes, welders, rollers, and crimper.

Estimates time and materials required to complete a work order; requisitions materials.

Receives assignments in the form of verbal or written work orders which may be accompanied by plans or sketches.

Receives general supervision from a Maintenance Supervisor or other designated supervisor; work is reviewed for completion and compliance with plans or directions.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Comprehensive knowledge of the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools used in the sheet metal trade.

Comprehensive knowledge of the qualities and adaptabilities of various metals used in sheet metal work.

Comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the sheet metal trade.

Ability to perform a variety of skilled sheet metal tasks.

Ability to work from plans and sketches, and understand and complete work orders.

Ability to estimate the time and materials required for completion of a work order.
