This is specialized electrical and mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of large scale heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment controls and systems in State office and industrial facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

 (The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)

Four or more years of experience in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or power plant operation, including one or more years of experience with substantial emphasis on controls, control theory, operation, calibration, maintenance and repair; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Post secondary training from an accredited vocational or technical school in heating, air-conditioning, refrigeration, electronics, or a closely related area may substitute on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the required general experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours, or 480 clock hours, for one year of experience.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Inspects, calibrates, operates, repairs, and maintains pneumatic, electrical, electronic, and micro-computer operated controls for HVAC equipment and systems. 

Makes daily checks of, and adjustments to; thermostats, receiver controllers, controllers, sensors, automatic control panels, solenoid valves, control valves, pressure gauges, and other related equipment for proper operation.

Repairs controls for HVAC equipment, installs new controls, replaces defective controls and accessories, troubleshoots, and tests HVAC equipment using controls.

Makes adjustments and repairs to HVAC equipment in conjunction with the installation, repair, and adjustment of controls and control system networks.

Installs controls and control components, prepares sketches, and does simple layout work such as measuring and cutting; assists contracting companies in the installation of larger systems.

Orders parts and replacement units.

Supervises and instructs maintenance helpers engaged in repair and maintenance of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and ventilation equipment.

Programs micro-computer operated control systems.

Assists in the troubleshooting and repair of electrical/mechanical systems, such as automatic door openers, fire alarms, and security systems; however, in the largest/most technologically sophisticated state office buildings or complexes, work is usually full time in the area of control calibration and repair.

Receives general direction from an administrative supervisor, who reviews completed work for satisfactory operation of equipment.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of the standard practices, methods, and tools involved in the operation, calibration, adjustment, maintenance, and installation of heating, refrigeration, air-conditioning, and ventilation equipment.

Comprehensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of refrigeration, air-conditioning, ventilation, electrical, fluid flow, boiler, heating plant operations, and systems.

Intermediate knowledge of micro-computer operated control systems.

Mechanical aptitude and the ability to understand and work with electricity.

Skill in detecting operating defects or faults in various kinds of HVAC systems.

Ability to work from blue prints and sketches, and to follow instructions and schematics furnished by manufacturers.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of maintenance helpers.

Ability to estimate materials, parts, and equipment needed for various maintenance jobs.
