This is senior-level professional graphic arts work preparing and maintaining a variety of visual communication products for a state agency.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility.  Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted.  These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Two or more years of experience as a Graphic Arts Specialist II with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.

OR

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college, university, or art institute with a minimum of 24 earned credit hours in one or a combination of the following: Art, Commercial Art, Graphic Art, Graphic Design, Computer Graphics, or a closely related field; and,

Two or more years of professional experience in graphic arts.

(24 earned graduate credit hours from an accredited college, university, or art institute in the specified areas may substitute for one year of the required experience.)

(Experience in graphic arts, commercial art, computer graphics, or a closely related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required education at a rate of one year for 30 earned credit hours.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Plans and formulates effective graphic arts services for agency programs.

Consults with administrative and professional personnel on various phases of design projects to determine the message and material to be illustrated.

Designs and prepares a variety of bulletins, manuals, and booklet covers which can be reproduced by means of standard printing processes.

Develops graphic artwork, layouts, and designs utilizing computer-assisted technology and a variety of media, equipment, and specialized graphic hardware and software.

Functions as liaison with printing vendors and/or staff printers; examines proofs for accuracy.

Designs and constructs, or directs the construction of, various visual presentations, including photographic displays, and exhibits from various sources; generates the finished product in various formats.

Prepares four-color printed documents and publications.

Prepares graphics for use in website design.

Prepares and/or modifies graphic artwork received from other agencies for printing.

Operates digital and video cameras.

Prepares and maintains files of projects and artwork for archives.

Supervises the printing of four-color and complex print jobs by observing press runs and examining color accuracy.

Serves as designer in developing and preparing various publications and web pages.

Exercises ind ependence in the performance of duties, with work being reviewed to assure accuracy of message; receives general administrative direction.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of graphic art methods, and the general principles of layout and design as applied to promotional and informational products.

Comprehensive knowledge of typeface, color harmony, and use of color.

Comprehensive knowledge of computer graphics programs, font styles, file formats, and the operation of various electronic equipment.

Comprehensive knowledge of typography, and typesetting principles and methods.

Comprehensive knowledge of operating digital and video cameras.

Intermediate knowledge of cartography.

Ability to translate the varied activities of an agency or program into informative and attractive visual communications.

Ability to create posters, drawings, diagrams, charts, maps, brochures, newsletters, and illustrations using a variety of computerized systems.

Ability to design and prepare exhibits and displays.

Ability to establish job specifications, request estimates, and function as liaison with printing vendors to produce the correct type, format, paper, and finished product as specified.

Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, management, and other agency personnel.
