This is technical work in the Seed Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture.

An employee in this class receives and prepares agricultural and vegetable seed samples and conducts basic analytical tests to determine compliance with the requirements of the Missouri Seed Law. The employee receives training in the identification of a variety of agricultural crops and seeds, testing procedures and standards established by the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA). Testing procedures are performed under close supervision in the early stages of training; as the employee becomes more experienced and demonstrates proficiency, the level of supervision becomes more general.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

One year as a Seed Analyst Trainee in the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

OR

Completion of a two-year Associate degree in seed technology from an accredited college or university.

OR

Two years of experience in seed analysis or closely related work in seed processing and/or sales which affords a knowledge of seed identification, testing and labeling procedures, and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency. (College coursework with an emphasis in seed technology, plant science, agronomy, agriculture or closely related areas may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for deficiencies in the required experience.)

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Receives training in crop and seed identification, AOSA standards and testing procedures from a higher-level Seed Analyst.

Performs basic analytical tests on seed samples to determine the presence of noxious and prohibited weed seeds.

Receives, logs and labels seed samples submitted by program field staff and individuals for testing.

Prepares seed samples for testing and analysis utilizing the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and Department of Agriculture procedures.

Documents test results; enters test data and results into the seed laboratory computer.

Operates, cleans and maintains seed laboratory equipment.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Working knowledge of basic seed science terminology, concepts and principles.

Some knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and policies relating to the regulation of the seed industry and the preparation and analysis of seed samples.

Some knowledge of the principles and techniques used in the production of seed.

Ability to learn and apply AOSA procedures and standards.

Ability to operate and maintain instruments and testing equipment such as a divider, moisture meter, grain board, microscope and blower.

Ability to prepare basic records and reports.

Ability to follow established procedures in the analysis of agricultural and vegetable seed samples.

Ability to perform detailed and repetitive work in accordance with exacting standards.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, seed companies and the general public.
