This is technical work in the Seed Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture.

An employee in this class conducts analytical tests on agricultural and vegetable seed samples to determine compliance with the requirements of the Missouri Seed Law. The employee receives training in advanced testing procedures and standards established by the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA), and within established timeframes, acquires AOSA certification to determine the viability, purity and germination potential of prepared seed samples and issue official AOSA sample certificates. Routine work is performed under general supervision from a higher-level Seed Analyst or other designated superior. Advanced testing procedures are performed under close supervision in the early stages of training; as the employee becomes more experienced, demonstrates proficiency and acquires AOSA certification, the level of supervision becomes more general.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in seed technology, plant science, agronomy, agriculture or closely related areas. (Possession of AOSA certifications in seed purity and germination may be accepted in lieu of the specified educational requirement.)

Special Requirements

Ability to obtain AOSA certifications in seed purity and germination within timeframes established by the Department of Agriculture.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Receives training in advanced AOSA standards and testing procedures from a higher-level Seed Analyst.

Performs advanced tests for purity and germination potential on prepared seed samples, including conducting tests on seed for the presence of fungus and tetrazolium tests on soybeans, native grasses and other samples to determine seed viability.

Performs basic analytical tests on seed samples to determine the presence of noxious and prohibited weed seeds.

Receives, logs and labels seed samples submitted by program field staff and individuals for testing.

Prepares seed samples for testing and analysis utilizing the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and Department of Agriculture procedures.

Documents test results; enters test data and results into the seed laboratory computer.

Operates, cleans and maintains seed laboratory equipment.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Working knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and policies relating to the regulation of the seed industry and the preparation and analysis of seed samples.

Working knowledge of the principles and techniques used in the production of seed.

Ability to learn and apply AOSA procedures and standards.

Ability to operate and maintain instruments and testing equipment such as a divider, moisture meter, grain board, microscope and blower.

Ability to prepare basic records and reports.

Ability to follow established procedures in the analysis of agricultural and vegetable seed samples.

Ability to perform detailed and repetitive work in accordance with exacting standards.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, seed companies and the general public.
