This is supervisory and administrative veterinary work for the Department of Agriculture involving the direction of a variety of programs for the identification, control and/or eradication of livestock diseases in a designated region of the state.

An employee in this class is responsible for directing and reviewing the activities of district veterinarians in a variety of disease control and/or eradication programs for cattle, horses, swine, sheep or other livestock. Work may also include statewide responsibility for the coordination of a complex and large-scale disease-specific livestock program such as pseudorabies or brucellosis. In addition, the employee is responsible for directing staff efforts in the inspection of livestock markets and slaughter establishments, the investigation of infected and quarantined herds, the preparation of epidemiological investigations and the development and implementation of herd management plans. Work also involves primary responsibility for the dissemination of information and the promotion of state and federal animal health programs to control or eradicate livestock diseases for the improvement of the livestock industry. General supervision is provided by the Deputy Veterinarian or other designated superior; however, the employee exercises considerable independence and initiative in the performance of assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Two years as a Veterinarian I with the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

OR

Three years of experience as a veterinarian involving the care and treatment of large animals; and graduation from an accredited school of veterinary medicine.

Special Requirements

1. Ability to obtain a license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri.

2. Ability to obtain federal accreditation to perform animal health regulatory work within timeframes established by the Missouri Department of Agriculture.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Develops and/or approves and monitors plans for the management of infected and quarantined herds which enable livestock owners to maintain productivity levels while controlling the spread of disease.

Prepares and maintains epidemiological records of exposed, infected and quarantined herds in the region; analyzes and compiles reports.

Organizes and conducts meetings with private veterinarians, livestock owners and producers, market operators, dealers and other interested parties to explain and promote state and federal animal health statutes, regulations and programs.

Supervises and evaluates assigned district veterinarians; reviews activity, livestock market and slaughter establishment inspection and epidemiological investigation reports submitted by district veterinarians for accuracy and timely submission.

Provides administrative support and advice to the Deputy Veterinarian or other state and federal officials on organizational and operational issues pertaining to animal health programs and services.

Maintains state vehicle and assigned veterinary and office equipment.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Ability to adapt to and work in adverse weather conditions.

Ability to work varying schedules and to travel extensively in the performance of assigned duties.
