This is a specialized area of veterinary medicine with responsibility for performing diagnostic procedures to provide an accurate diagnosis, or identifying the etiological pathogen, of an animal's cause of death.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

Graduation from an accredited College of Veterinary Medicine; and,

Four or more years of experience as a Veterinarian involving the care and treatment of large animals, including two or more years of experience in pathology investigations and reporting, with an emphasis on food animal production.

Special Requirements

License to practice, or ability to obtain a license to practice, veterinary medicine in the State of Missouri.

Advanced training or board certification in the discipline of veterinary pathology.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Provides pathology services to the livestock, poultry, and pet industry i n the study and diagnosis of the nature, causes, and effects of animal diseases; reports all findings to the State Veterinarian's office.

Coordinates with laboratory manager and provides guidance and direction for diagnostic laboratories.

Performs necropsies on animals submitted to diagnostic laboratories.

Coordinates the investigation and diagnostic examination to determine the etiological pathogen of a disease outbreak; coordinates additional required animal testing.

Identifies the etiological pathogen through utilization of necropsy and diagnostic testing.

Obtains samples/tissue for analysis to determine the pathogen responsible for lesions or symptoms observed.

Prepares a report of the findings of the necropsy and the results of additional tests performed.

Develops standard operating procedures for performing necropsies and handling any specimens submitted for additional tests.

Provides administrative and technical program support and advice; makes recommendations on statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures for improved program services.

Communicates concerns to the State Veterinarian regarding increased outbreaks of disease or significant changes in pathogen pathology.

Communicates with veterinarians to increase awareness of services provided by the diagnostic laboratory and identify areas of improvement and diagnostic needs not being served.

Receives general supervision from the State Veterinarian or other designated supervisor; exercises independence and initiative in the performance of duties within established guidelines.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Comprehensive knowledge of the function and objectives of a statewide animal health program.

Comprehensive knowledge of applicable state and federal animal health statutes, regulations, enforcement standards, animal testing, and inspection procedures.

Comprehensive knowledge of animal health inspection and investigation techniques.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of serology, bacteriology, biotechnology, epidemiology, and other science disciplines as they apply to pathogen identification and disease control programs.

Comprehensive knowledge of the principles of effective management, supervision, and training.

Ability to communicate, interpret, and enforce animal health statutes, rules, regulations, and policies.

Ability to communicate effectively and prepare clear and concise reports.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, government agencies, industry associations, and the general public.
