This is advanced professional work for the Department of Agriculture in the coordination of a public information and marketing program for the Missouri State Fair.

The employee in this class is responsible for developing and implementing a public information program to promote the objectives and accomplishments of the State Fair through news releases to the press, general publications, and arranging speaking engagements for agency officials. Work also includes assisting in locating/retaining Fair sponsors and promotional partners. General supervision is provided by the Division Director; however, the employee is expected to exercise independence in the performance of duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Four years of professional experience in journalism, public information, public relations or marketing; and graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with specialization in public relations, journalism, English, marketing, business or public administration or in a closely related area. (Graduate education in journalism, marketing or a closely related area may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for a maximum of two years of the required work experience.)

Job Duties

Prepares or reviews material for distribution to news media, state and community organizations, businesses and the general public; arranges public speaking engagements and other appearances for Fair officials on radio or television.

Prepares, edits and oversees the layout of brochures, pamphlets and other State Fair publications.

Develops and coordinates a public information program to promote the objectives and accomplishments of the State Fair.

Researches local, regional and national companies targeted as potential Fair sponsors or promotional partners; assists the Division Director in developing and presenting company-specific proposals for mutually beneficial media and promotional exposure; develops written agreements for use as billing documents.

Recommends expenditures and negotiates contracts for free entertainment acts and special exhibits during the Fair; makes recommendations for modified or new attractions.

Provides administrative support and advice to the Division Director on matters pertaining to the public information program for the State Fair; assists in the formulation of public relations policies.

Serves as public information coordinator for the Fair; supervises the operations of the media office temporary staff.

Performs other related work as assigned.
