This is senior-level administrative and supervisory work directing fire/rescue and medical treatment services operations and assisting in the planning and administration of the military airfield fire department within the jurisdiction of the Office of the Adjutant General.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)
Two or more years of experience as an Assistant Fire Chief with the Office of the Adjutant General.
OR
Seven or more years of firefighting experience in a military or civilian fire department, including a minimum of two years supervising a shift of multiple firefighting crews; and possession of certifications in Fire Fighter I and II, Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations, First Responder, Airport Fire Fighter, Driver/Operator Pumper, Driver/Operator ARFF (Crash Vehicles), Driver/Operator Tanker Telecommunicator I and II, Fire Officer I, II, and III, Fire Instructor I and II, Fire Inspector I and II, and Hazardous Material Incident Command from approved International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) courses/classes; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.
Ability to pass prescribed medical, physical fitness, and agility examinations maintaining specified standards.
Ability to pass initial and periodic background investigations, and maintain a specified security clearance.
Within specified time frames, successfully obtain and maintain various civilian and/or military equivalent training certifications, and participate in other required activities as prescribed by the Office of the Adjutant General in accordance with requirements set forth in cooperative agreement(s) with the National Guard Bureau.
Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and state Vehicle Operator’s License.

Plans and directs the operations of multiple shifts of firefighting crews assigned at a military airfield fire department; assists the Fire Chief with the fire department’s planning and administrative functions.
Directs the response to fire alarms and emergency medical service (EMS) incidents to contain/extinguish fires and/or emergency medical activities; serves as incident Commander.
Advises the Fire Chief on fire department policies, training, equipment, personnel assignments, and disciplinary actions.
Participates in the preparation of the fire department’s budget; surveys buildings, grounds, and equipment to estimate appropriation needs.
Develops strategic plans; coordinates and directs special projects and staff development programs for the fire department.
Oversees training of fire personnel; prepares staff training schedules; maintains staff training records.
Makes scheduled and unscheduled inspections during or outside of the regularly scheduled tour of duty; conducts unannounced structural or crash rescue exercises to evaluate staff performance.
Evaluates and provides recommended modifications to fire prevention and control policies, rules and programs, conducts operational studies, and administers rules and regulations affecting the fire department.
Directs and coordinates Mutual Aid requests with surrounding municipalities.
Supervises the supply program; orders supplies to maintain appropriate inventory levels.
Attends meetings and/or briefings regarding construction, engineering, fire prevention, safety, and related issues.
Attends firefighter and related training courses to obtain/maintain certifications as required.
Serves as liaison officer between the fire department and other organizational units assigned to the military airfield installation.
Provides assistance with investigations as needed.
Addresses military or governmental officials and community groups and conducts public relations campaigns to encourage fire prevention.
Exercises considerable independence and initiative in the performance of duties; receives general administrative direction.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Comprehensive knowledge of modern fire prevention, suppression, and rescue methods and equipment.
Comprehensive knowledge of the structural features and design of all aircraft that are housed at or use the assigned airfield, as well as the construction materials and basic structural layout of all airfield buildings.
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective supervision and training.
Intermediate knowledge of policies and procedures relating to the fire department’s support activities including the budget, procurement, and personnel.
Skill in fighting various types of fires (i.e., aircraft, structure, vehicle, etc.).
Skill in directing the operation of specialized vehicles and equipment.
Ability to develop and evaluate programs, plans, and policies for the fire department.
Ability to perform the physical demands of the position including heavy lifting, climbing, and maneuvering.
Ability to work in conditions involving extremely high temperatures, toxic fumes, smoke inhalation, etc.
Ability to respond quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
Ability to administer emergency first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Ability to communicate effectively and hear verbal and radio communications.
Ability to present training and instructional information to staff and the general public.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the staff and the general public.
