This is technical inspection work in the Department of Public Safety ensuring conformity and compliance by various state licensed/exempted facilities and businesses to national, state and local fire safety codes, statutes, rules and regulations.
An employee in this class independently performs initial, annual and renewal inspections of assigned facilities and businesses licensed by various state agencies (i.e., Departments of Health, Mental Health, Social Services) for the Division of Fire Safety. Work involves inspecting licensed/certified senior citizen centers, hotels, state-operated mental health facilities, child care facilities, wholesale and retail fireworks businesses, etc., to ensure compliance with applicable fire safety codes, statutes, rules and regulations. Work also involves providing technical assistance to interested parties; fulfilling courtesy inspection requests; responding to inquiries from the public; and conducting educational fire safety seminars and presentations. Employees independently complete assignments within an assigned geographic area of the state; and receive direction from a Fire Inspection Supervisor or other designated superiors through surveys and reports, meetings, technical updates, training and other periodic consultative contact.
Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:
(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility, experience and education ratings, and may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers. When practical and possible, the Division of Personnel will accept substitution of experience and education on a year-for-year basis.)
Three years of experience as a firefighter, fire officer, inspector or closely related fire service work in a municipal, military or governmental fire department, fire prevention bureau or related fire service entity; and/or experience as an inspector with an insurance rating or adjusting bureau; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency. (College coursework with specialization in fire science or a closely related field may be substituted for up to two years of the stated experience.)
Ability to obtain a Missouri Fire Inspector Certification within timeframes specified by the Division of Fire Safety.
Possession of a valid Missouri vehicle operator’s license.

Schedules and conducts initial, annual and renewal inspections of assigned facilities and businesses that are licensed/exempted by various state agencies (i.e., Department of Health, Department of Mental Health, Division of Family Services, Division of Fire Safety) to ensure conformity and compliance with applicable fire safety codes, statutes, rules and regulations.
Completes fire safety inspection surveys, noting all items found to be non-compliant; advises facility/business management of any possible fire hazards and/or other unsafe conditions identified during inspection; recommends corrective action to ensure future compliance.
Conducts re-inspection of facilities where improvements/corrections have been recommended.
Conducts fire drills, notes observations relating to evacuation readiness, reviews evacuation plans and records of past fire drills conducted; completes an evaluation form explaining areas for improvement.
Inspects retail and wholesale fireworks facilities for compliance with applicable fire safety codes, statutes, rules and regulations; reports any law violations to the appropriate authorities.
Conducts courtesy fire safety inspections for requesting entities such as jails, schools and veterans’ homes.
Assists in reviewing plans or blueprints for new construction and remodeling plans for existing facilities.
Conducts or assists in conducting inspections of framing, wiring, fire alarm and sprinkler systems during and upon completion of new construction to determine compliance with approved building and site plans and ensure adequate fire protection before a license to operate is issued.
Conducts educational fire safety seminars and presentations for fire service and related groups.
Attends training sessions, seminars and related educational programs to maintain requisite training and Missouri Fire Inspector Certification.
Compiles weekly and monthly inspection reports.
Performs other related work as assigned.
Considerable knowledge of applicable fire safety codes, statutes, rules and regulations.
Considerable knowledge of possible fire and safety hazards, preventive techniques and methods, and related equipment, materials and safety features for various facilities and businesses.
Considerable knowledge of inspection methods and techniques.
Skill in recognizing potential fire and safety hazards.
Ability to identify, interpret and apply applicable fire safety codes, statutes, rules and regulations for various licensed/exempt facilities and businesses in an assigned geographic area.
Ability to critically observe, obtain data and prepare reports on findings.
Ability to propose and develop effective solutions to fire and safety hazards identified during inspections.
Ability to conduct educational fire safety seminars and presentations.
Ability to establish and maintains effective working relationships with state agency personnel, facility/business management and staff, contractors, architects, city and county officials/inspectors, local fire departments, and others concerned with fire safety.
