Definition

This is trainee-level work in the Seed Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture.

An employee in this class receives and prepares agricultural and vegetable seed samples for analysis. The employee receives extensive training in the basic analytical, testing, interpretation and reporting functions performed by the Seed Laboratory. Work is performed under the close supervision of a higher-level Seed Analyst or other designated superior.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

Possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Job Duties

This description may not include all of the duties, knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with this classification.

Receives basic training in sample breakdown and preparation techniques, identification of crop and weed seeds, and proper testing procedures and techniques.

Receives, logs and labels seed samples submitted by program field staff and individuals for testing.

Prepares seed samples for testing and analysis utilizing the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and Department of Agriculture procedures.

Assists in the preparation of substrates or media for use in testing seeds following established procedures.

Maintains appropriate records consistent with assigned responsibilities.

Performs manual tasks in the proper handling, breakdown and preparation of samples, and in the proper storage of equipment, materials and supplies; cleans and maintains laboratory equipment.

Performs other related work as assigned.

Key Skills

Some knowledge of basic seed science terminology, concepts and principles.

Some knowledge of basic laboratory techniques, equipment and terminology.

Ability to clean and maintain laboratory equipment and to perform other basic laboratory tasks.

Ability to learn the proper use of laboratory equipment.

Ability to understand and effectively carry out instructions and established procedures.

Ability to accurately identify, compare, distinguish and record necessary lab data such as names, numbers, label information, etc.
