This is security and entry-level supervisory work protecting public property and equipment against loss or damage from theft, fire, vandalism, or other causes, and maintaining order and proper behavior of individuals and groups for a state facility.
Supervises security staff on an assigned shift; provides for the security and protection of property in a state office building or a comparable public facility with complex security needs.
Observes lower-level staff and evaluates their performance; prepares work schedules and makes routine changes in assignments. Informs employees concerning changes in security policies and procedures; makes routine decisions concerning work assignments.
Conducts regular rounds throughout buildings and/or grounds observing the demeanor of the public, employees, residents, or clients; takes necessary action to ensure proper conduct is followed.
Reviews reports prepared by lower-level security staff; prepares reports concerning questionable conduct of employees, residents, clients, or the public.
Investigates acts of vandalism or theft, and works closely with law enforcement officials on investigations whenever necessary.
Responds to routine questions and provides directions to the public.
Directs and controls traffic at parking lots of public buildings/facilities; informs staff when to install traffic signs around emergency areas.
Assists in planning and implementing training programs involving security procedures.
Organizes and directs searches when clients/residents walk away or escape; assists in handling distressed clients/residents.
Takes necessary action in removing unruly individuals or detaining them until they are turned over to the proper authorities.
Dispatches facility vehicles; arranges for repairs; and checks oil and gas to assure readiness for the next dispatch.
Transports staff, clients, and/or suspects as needed.
Assists other facility personnel in maintaining security and assuring that necessary precautionary measures are taken for the protection of individuals and property.
Conducts fire prevention inspections and responds to all fire alarms.
Performs work in accordance with established rules and regulations; receives general supervision from a higher-level Security Officer or other designated administrative supervisor.
Performs other related work as assigned.
(The following requirements will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statements; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)
One or more years of experience as a Security Officer I with the Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System.
OR
Two or more years of experience in public, private, civilian, or military security, law enforcement, or experience within an intermediate/maximum security mental health facility performing security functions; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.
(Earned credit hours from an accredited college or university, technical, or military school may substitute on a year-for year basis for the stated experience at a rate of 30 earned credit hours or 480 clock hours for one year.)
By assignment, a position may require successful completion of a physical agility test administered by the hiring agency prior to employment.
By assignment, a position may require the ability to secure a license to carry firearms.
By assignment, a position may require possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Intermediate knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies established for ensuring adequate facility security and protection.
Intermediate knowledge and understanding of general law enforcement procedures in dealing with large numbers of people.
Intermediate knowledge of facility rules for acceptable behavior on campus and/or grounds.
Ability to train and supervise security staff and evaluate their performance.
Ability to communicate effectively, meet the public, respond to questions, and furnish information.
Ability to control and direct various sized groups of people and subdue suspects.

Ability to plan, establish, maintain, and effect changes, when necessary, regarding security matters.
Ability to walk for long periods of time, both indoors and outdoors under varying work and climatic conditions.

Ability to exercise appropriate judgment and act quickly in emergency situations.
Ability to coordinate security activities with outside agencies and to assist in facility safety programs.
