Definition

This is physical work maintaining grounds, structures, and equipment at a state park and/or historic site.

Job Duties

Performs routine tasks related to the upkeep of the State’s parks and/or historic sites.

Performs routine plumbing and electrical systems repairs; assists skilled tradesmen with more complex repairs.

Paints, stains, or repairs structures or furniture such as walls, tables, and chairs; assembles furniture. 

Winterizes structures, water/wastewater systems, and equipment; performs other seasonal maintenance as required.

Performs preventative maintenance and routine repairs on equipment and vehicles.

Greets the public and provides information regarding park rules, regulations, and available resources.

Operates mowing machines, tractors, trucks, outboard motors/boats, all-terrain vehicles/utility task vehicles, snow removal equipment, chain saws, and other equipment.

Provides guidance to seasonal workers, offenders, and/or volunteer staff.

Transports or tows materials or equipment; ensures loads are secure and in compliance with federal, state, and agency regulations and policies; loads and unloads materials or equipment.

Cleans and maintains vault latrines, restrooms, showers, cabins, visitor centers, picnic areas, and/or camping areas; gathers and removes trash and debris from public areas.

Mows and rakes grass; clears weeds and brush; cuts/hauls firewood; plows snow and clears walkways of snow and ice.

Assists in the operation and maintenance of water/wastewater systems.

Assists with prescribed burns.

Opens/closes gates, buildings, day use areas, and other public areas.

Assists office staff with pulling reservation reports, transporting bank deposits, and providing information relating to purchasing tasks; purchases items utilizing purchasing card as approved by supervisor.

Receives general administrative direction in regard to routine work assignments and is provided specific instructions and close supervision on new assignments.

Performs other related work as assigned.

(The following minimum qualifications will determine merit system eligibility. Allowable experience and education substitutions are provided in italics below the corresponding minimum qualification statement; no other substitutions will be permitted. These minimum qualifications may also be used to evaluate applicants for Missouri Uniform Classification and Pay System positions not requiring selection from merit registers.)

One or more years of experience in one or a combination of the following: construction, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical (heating and cooling, refrigeration, welding, engine repair, etc.) trades; groundskeeping work; farm work including the operation of farm machinery and/or construction of structures/enclosures; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

(Training in a formal program of instruction from an accredited school in one or more of the building, mechanical, or electrical trades may substitute for the required experience at a rate of 3 high school credit hours, 30 earned credit hours, or 480 clock hours for one year.)

OR

2000 verifiable hours of experience with Missouri’s Division of State Parks as a seasonal worker and/or State Park Youth Corps participant performing groundskeeping and/or maintenance duties; and possession of a high school diploma or proof of high school equivalency.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid vehicle operator’s license.

Introductory knowledge of basic construction and repair methods.

Introductory knowledge of the operation, cleaning, care, and maintenance of equipment and hand and power tools.

Introductory knowledge of the standard tools and practices used in mechanical; electrical; plumbing; painting; carpentry; masonry; plastering; and/or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) trades.

Ability to operate motor vehicles, mowing machinery, and tractors, and use hand and power tools.

Ability to lift and carry heavy loads and bend, stoop, reach, and climb a ladder.

Ability to traverse over rugged or uneven terrain for extended periods of time.

Ability to perform work often requiring significant physical exertion in extreme weather.

Ability to understand and carry out instructions without immediate supervision.

Ability to provide information to the general public regarding park rules, regulations, and available resources.
